vivid imaginationOh Lordie, that writer was rather pleased they came up with the high school metaphor!
I wonder what else they tried apart from doubles that ended up being the last attempt?
Q. What is the injury, Dinara?
DINARA SAFINA: It's a low back, between L4, L5. I have inflammation there, in the bone, inflammation. I've been having it already, I would say, started slowly since Portoroz. I've been playing on the pain, on antiinflammatory, on everything. So this been already for about three months, this pain.
Q. What did the doctor say? Is it just rest that's going to cure it or maybe surgery or what?
DINARA SAFINA: No, definitely there is no surgery. It's kind of starting of fracture on my L5. So this is just the time. You know, of course, it's the time, then it's the rehabilitation. I have to work on my muscles, on my core stability. As I'm tall, I need to be strong, that I can hold myself. This is going to be a very long procedure.
Q. Do you suffer any pain when you're not on the court? Is the pain there all the time or does it come when you try to play?
DINARA SAFINA: Let's say now, even if I walk, I feel pain. Like it hits me there. Because I spoke with the doctor, and he told me, like, Try to handle. But it's impossible to handle this pain. It's everywhere. If I bend, if I move, if I step. So let's say now I'm sitting and I feel it's there. I cannot even relax this muscle. I'm under tension, not even to relax this muscle.
It really isn't a joke - it was the core injury for Tracy Austin and Andre Agassi (plus both had other back injuries added to it) that ended their tennis careers. It sounds like Dina was going against earlier advice and tried to keep playing because of the #1 ranking. I hope she follows her Doctor's orders from now on and doesn't push herself too much. It makes me look back at her play since Portoroz and wonder how much of her erratic play was due to mental nerves (which everyone thought) and how much was due to the back injury. I feel bad for her - get well soon Dina!poor dinara. sciatica's no joke :awww: she needs to take a good rest now. no crazy things like climbing mountains or fishing
As far as I know the problem in her bask is an old one. It's like slow bomb, it could explode anytime. She doesn't have mental problems, just physical ones.
Safina out of Brisbane International WTA
(AFP) – 1 day ago
BRISBANE, Australia — Russia's world number two Dinara Safina has pulled out of January's Brisbane international tennis tournament, according to organisers.
Safina has advised tournament officials she is withdrawing from the event due to a back injury.
Brisbane International tournament director Steve Ayles said Safina was disappointed she would not be attending the tournament.
"Safina was very much looking forward to starting her year in Brisbane and it is a real shame that she will not be fit in time to attend," Ayles said.
"I know she would have been working around the clock to try to be ready for the event, but in the end time has beat her and she is still undergoing treatment."
After brunch I showed Allon my apartment in Moscow, which will probably never be ready. Maybe my grandchildren will be the ones who will see it ready.
