Agassi commits to Countrywide Classic

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi has committed to play in the 80th annual Countrywide Classic on July 24-30 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center-UCLA.

Agassi, the defending champion, is seeking his fifth singles title in the Los Angeles event, and fourth in the last six years.

Other players already committed to the tournament include Camarillo's Bob and Mike Bryan, Lleyton Hewitt, David Nalbandian and Ivan Ljubicic.

Ageless Agassi to defend title in LA

Los Angeles - Four-time champion Andre Agassi will return ot the site of his 60th career title next month as he plays in the Countrywide Classic.

The 36-year-old, winner of the hardcourt event for three of the past five years, will join a field which includes Argentine David Nalbandian and former number 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Croatia's Davis Cup sparkplugs Ivan Ljubicic and Mario Ancic are entered in the July 24-30 tournament at UCLA. Also playing: Chile's Fernando Gonzalez.

Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion, has lifted 15 of his career trophies in the last five years.

He has finished in the Top ten on 16 occasions in his 20-year career, tied with Jimmy Connors for the most career Top 10 ifnishes.

He won LA titles in 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2005, one of only four players to lift a trophy quartet.

I hope Andre run's some magic going into the Open but, when it's done it'll be a day of reflection. (We're the same age) :/

And in the sem/final is could be roddick tough first round for andre hope his bak is ok and he is ready to play go andre go

Agassi, the Bryans and tennis great Pam Shriver (joining in as chair umpire) will be part of the high-profile, star-studded fifth annual “Gibson Baldwin Night at the Net,” Monday, July 24. Celebrity participants include actor/comedian Jon Lovitz, Entourage star Jeremy Piven and Jack and Stench from “the Jamie, Jack and Stench Show” on STAR 98.7 FM as ball boys for the event. The evening’s musical performer will be GRAMMY® Award winner Brian McKnight, and Verve Recording artist Mindi Abair will sing the National Anthem.

Malisse is 17-14 on the year and 10-8 on doubles. His highlights are reaching the finals of Adelaide and Delray Beach at the beginning of the year. He also reached the Quarter Finals of Las Vegas. Malisse is coming off a strong performance in Indianapolis last week, losing in the Semi Finals to James Blake. In Doubles, he reached the Semi Finals of Adelaide at the start of the year with Philippoussis.

Agassi is 6-5 on the year. His highlights are reaching the Quarter Finals of Delray Beach at the start of the season and losing a thrilling third round encounter at Wimbledon to Rafael Nadal just a few weeks ago. He also lost in the Semi Finals of a Wimbledon tune-up event in Stoke, crashing out to Russia's Mikhail Youzhny. Andre is the defending Champion after crushing Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in last years final!

Agassi begins hardcourt farewell

Andre Agassi has begun his final summer hardcourt season at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles with a 7-6 6-0 victory over Xavier Malisse.
The 36-year-old American tennis great has announced that he will retire after this year's US Open.

"I'm still out there with a competitive spirit," said Agassi after seeing off Malisse in 110F degree heat.

"I'm looking forward to this summer and in some regards I'm in denial about it being my last summer out here."

He added: "I'm aware of how life's going to change and I'm out there wanting it to last as long and as good as possible."

Agassi, the fifth seed, is the defending champion at the $500,000 event and has won it four times.

Earlier, third seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile and Russian eighth seed Dmitry Tursunov moved into the second round by winning a pair of tiebreakers.

Gonzalez beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) and Tursunov defeated Thailand's Danai Udomchoke, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4).

Round Two Preview:

George Bastl comes into this match only 3-5 on the year with only a Quarter Finals in the Cordoba Challenger his highlight. Andre has never played Bastl, who made his name when he knocked Pete Sampras out of Wimbledon in 2002. COME ON ANDRE!!!
