I stayed longer at work to see all the match The second set was useless actually but first set lasted more than 1 hour and ended of course with a tie-break lost by Arno . Fed started really poorly with 30% of first serve, Arno was 2-0 up then Fed started to improve slowly and Arno resisted with nice shots sometimes but this set point missed at 6-5* on a backand errors closed the battle.

The shots selection if first set was quite nice with some lovely volleys and a solid backhand and good returns on second serve of Roger. In second set Fed was serving very well and Arno already gives up but honestly that first set was not too bad from Arno especially on clay.

I don't agree with Arnaud giving up in the second set.

Well played Arnaud ! To reach the tie break is good -ok, Roger won't win RG this year...lol)

I hope this match will give him confidence for RG !!!

In first set Arno was very concentrated believing in the win then in the second he was less concentrated more tired mentally after that long first set he didn't give up if you want girls but he was less believing in a win and Fed was playing and serving really better that gives a very different second set with less battle.

For me giving up is when he doesn't try to get to the 'harder' balls and just doesn't seem to care. I didn't notice that in the 2nd set. It was harder for him in the 2nd, but he still tried. And against Roger, he could've started the match thinking it was hopeless and he didn't.

I like this article ! (thanks leslie)

Lovely match...arnaud was spectacular at the net !!!! omg lol

the scoreline was a lot stronger than i expected. he has lost recently to guys like garcia-lopez with a much more lopsided score lol (so garcia-lopez will win RG? lol)

for other bad losses, we only need to go back a few pages in this thread. i think he should be pretty happy now... until he loses badly again to some challenger opponent

If Arnaud can play like he did in the first set he could do well at the French! He played well and put the pressure on Roger in the first set, and the second set he got deflated a bit from losing the first when he had chances and his level dropped. But he definitely tried the entire match, and you can see his form starting to come back for him. Hopefully this tournament is a sign for better things to come in the distance.

The match report in L'Equipe, it's way harsher than the other article. I can't judge, I didn't see the match.
Arnaud was sick, he has a gastric flu, hopes to be fit again for Bordeaux. The article stresses that the level was not good, and both players agree, Fed says it really wasn't pretty. Arnaud is very frustrated because he was so looking forward to playing Fed and then he couldn't enjoy it at all because he was not in shape to play and was dead after one set:
Quote:

Yes there was something wrong in the second set that's why i wrote he gave up and indeed he almost says it In the first set he made some good things especially at the net and try to make the right choices but true that Fed started ton play tennis only in second set. Gael pulled out cos stomach problems the same for Martin who retired against GGL and now Arno a gastro was surely there. We'll see for Bordeaux but a gastro can put you out 3 days and you lost of course energy if he starts only tuesday it still possible

He draws Przysiezny who has really good results on challenger tour since the start of the year and seems to be a quite good clay challenger player. No doubles and no match tomorrow for Arno.

Just saw a bit of the match, the end of first set where it seems that Arno had a lot of problems to return the polish serve who is indeed quite good. I missed the second set that he won quite easily and come back when he was a break down in the third so good fight from Arno to win that. The polish'serve was less good than at the start of the match and he made a lot of UE with his backhand, Arno was not doing a lot of winners just trying to avoid the UE but it looks like it has been more a battle than great tennis and it's good to win that matches for the head. Next is ERV who beats Acasuso and always close match between both.
