Default Questions Regarding Self, Society and Global Issues

I've been pondering various questions regarding governments and people, and so I would like to ask a couple of questions, so I can get some feedback.

This will also help for an upcoming class project. So if you can, please participate.

Please state your nationality and gender.

You can be as brief or as elaborate as you want.

1) In what way do you feel your government annoys you?

2) In what way do you feel your government helps you?

3) Do you feel that you (as well as the general public), receive enough accurate information regarding issues that are important to you?

4) Do you feel the need to get involved in any social issue? Why or why not?

5) What is your opinion regarding other people on important issues?

6) Given the resources we have, what would an ideal social system would look like to you?

7) Is the life you are living close to what you imagined it would be? What would you change about it if you could?

8) On a scale from 1-10 (10 being "a lot", maximum, etc.), how often do you think about "intellectual issues"?

English-Male

Quote:
1) In what way do you feel your government annoys you?
3 main things.

1.In my case, I am annoyed that our government uses our tax-money to help lazy spongers (able-folks on benefits or welfare) who aren't contributing at all.

2.I also wish that Westminister wouldn't treat us like idiots and realise that they are there to implement the wishes of the majority. A referundum on E.U. membership is need urgently.

3. The dumbed down education system that enables Chavs and scum to scrape through to Universities where they ruin the spirit of higher education.
Quote:
2) In what way do you feel your government helps you?
An adequate health system available to all although it's efficiency could be improved. Also areas regarding experimental medecine need reforming and the NHS needs to start helping patients who might need to resort to experimental drugs for cancer treatment.
Quote:
3) Do you feel that you (as well as the general public), receive enough accurate information regarding issues that are important to you?
Like with most governments, people only hear twisted an dpolished up words from politicians, words that mask he reality. Basically, in cases like Afghanistan and the economy the general feeling is that The government and opposition partis are taking us for a ride and not teling us the real extent of our bad economy, deficit. Also the so called solutions are just a bunch of words that are meaningless.

Quote:
4) Do you feel the need to get involved in any social issue? Why or why not?
Yes, on many issues like to defend the right of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is the basis of true freedom and democracy. I also want to fight for effective crime punishment. The reason I get involved and think that many people ought to do is because, it's every citizen's right to stand up and protect fundamental beliefs and not just sleep passively believing politicians will take care of all our problems. Any effective government is one that is contantly pressured by it's people for results.
Quote:
5) What is your opinion regarding other people on important issues?
I respect all opinions although in some cases I can't help but feel democracy isn't really working. The majority appears in most cases to be the most vain and stupid.

Quote:
6) Given the resources we have, what would an ideal social system would look like to you?
I don't believe in a Nanny state (full-socialism) where debt increases endlessly and where people are craddled from birth to grave. Obviously there are some things that I believe the state should provide to it's people. However I believe that the state should provide everyone with education and health. I also think the only people on welfare should be the disabled and able citizen's can only be on the welfare for a maximum of a year, after which they'd be on their own. A semi Socialist-Conservative system would work perfectly.

Quote:
7) Is the life you are living close to what you imagined it would be? What would you change about it if you could?
For the moment I am still studying my degree and also self employed so I can't really amswer the question. However, I see myself on the right track to acheive all that I seek.
Quote:
8) On a scale from 1-10 (10 being "a lot", maximum, etc.), how often do you think about "intellectual issues"?

Spanish-Female

1. well, I'm not very into the social policies of the government of ZP, I have never believed on his ideas, the unemployment rate is growing like crazy and the politic correctness of the whole government idea is annoying, I mean, putting someone as incapable as Carme Chacón in the Defense Ministry just because she's a woman is an insult to all of us as a gender, there are tons of much more capable women that could have done it, but that woman knows about military stuff just as much as I know about the third division of the handball vietnamite league

2. well, the spanish government is a bit special for the whole autonomic community stuff, I like the fact that in my community (Euskadi) now you have the right to choose the language(s) in which your children are gonna be educated in (euskera only, spanish only or euskera/spanish), I like the fact that now we're free to express ourselves in whatever language we want
I also like the fact that we are no longer under PNV's rule

3. I do think that governments always lie or hide stuff from the people, but in most matters that I care about, I get enough info, specially now since we have the internet

4. please be more specific about "social issue" ?

5. I try to respect other people as much as possible, but haters and terrorists tend to get the better of me, no matter where, so I guess I listen to others as much as I can, but only if there's respect and common sense involved

6. Injustice is a part of mankind, so I don't believe in an ideal system, I just can't see a world like that

7. I'm very happy with my life as it is, but I would like to earn more money though, specially thinking about my kids' education and well-being

8. well, if you think intellectually is Chomsky-Smith-Rosseau, then not much just about 5 or so, but considering I'm a chemical engineering and have to think about plant simulation and a lot of other stuff, then I would have to say 8 or 9 (when I'm not at MTF though )

my whole political system annoys me, it's an absolute monarchy, which means no assembly, political movements, parties or any sort of political activities are permitted, activists and political critics and opposing individuals, groups or even bloggers are persecuted and arrested, and the government takes care of society like a farm owner, feeding the people and providing them with good financial support, and that's all you get, not to mention the monumental forms of corruption within most if not the whole royalty system.

also the deep association with an extremist version of religion with the royal house and the government and the enforcement of that version on the whole society is very annoying to say the least.

there are many good sides to such systems especially in the middle east, take Lebanon as an example of a free political arab country and what crises they have to endure every some time, one tends to think sometimes that our societies have not yet developed politically enough to engage in a healthy democracy, but historically they were never given a chance to develope such a thing anyway!! but I digress..

well, given how wealthy the country is, they really don't have to do much, but at least they don't enforce any forms of taxes and they pay their citizens pretty well, and support their education, living in general and maintain a high standard of life style for the middle class.

hell no! transparency is the last of my government's merits, non-existent for that matter.

sure there are many social or even political issues that I'd like to get involved with to certain degress, I'm not a politician or an activist but I'm willing to support many causes.

then again there are many social causes going on but I never looked around further than my studies and normal life, so I'm not too sure about that lol.

I haven't thought about such an ideal system before, and honesty I don't think I have an answer in mind, there is no way an ideal system would work in real life anyway.

well pretty much, I mean that's the life I've grown up in and lived so far and nothing much changed, so how would I have imagined anything else?

there are countless things I would change, I've seen enough of the world to identify so many social flaws we have, but there are good things as well.

OK - I promised Manu - so hope this helps.

Please state your nationality and gender.

English, female

You can be as brief or as elaborate as you want.

1) In what way do you feel your government annoys you?
By spending way too much money on "welfare" and people who won't help themselves, whilst ignoring the plight of old people and those who are truly sick.

2) In what way do you feel your government helps you?
I am a great believer in the National Health Service - without it, and the laws that provide for it, many ordinary people would not be able to have medical treatment

3) Do you feel that you (as well as the general public), receive enough accurate information regarding issues that are important to you?
Probably not

4) Do you feel the need to get involved in any social issue? Why or why not?
Not really. I'm a Social Worker by profession, so I deal with it every day, so frankly, out of office hours, I don't feel the need to deal with any "social issues" as such. However, I do a lot of voluntary work for animal welfare which whilst probably not consiodered a "social issue" by many, is something I feel very strongly about.

5) What is your opinion regarding other people on important issues?
I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions, as long as they don't try to convert me, but when those opinions translate into terrorism or violence, I cannot accept it

6) Given the resources we have, what would an ideal social system would look like to you?
I don't think there is such a thing as an "ideal social system" but I would like to see something where the elderly and truly sick were treated with respect, and people thought more about the "victims" of crime and less about the wellbeing of the criminals

7) Is the life you are living close to what you imagined it would be? What would you change about it if you could?
Yes - pretty much, I've been lucky. Only thing I would change is to enough money to give up work and devote my time to my animal welfare issues. If I won the Lottery or suddenly had millions I would set up a charity for animals and run Animal Hospitals/Homes to try and help to see an end to animal cruelty and neglect. That is my dream

8) On a scale from 1-10 (10 being "a lot", maximum, etc.), how often do you think about "intellectual issues"?
If I'm honest - very little - no more than a 3 or 4 Maybe 20 years ago when I was still at school I wanted to "change the world" and thought deeply about "issues". But now I'm older my life is totally wrapped up in day-to-day work issues and family life, and I don't have the energy or inclination for them.

Hope that helps you.

Default Re: Questions Regarding Self, Society and Global Issues

Please state your nationality and gender.

Mexican, Male

You can be as brief or as elaborate as you want.

1) In what way do you feel your government annoys you?

By making excessive discretionary expenses when more than half of the population is poor. Also by having supreme court ministers making more than 300k USD per year and an oversized and overpaid congress of 500 members in the house and 100 in the senate. More over, it annoys me by having city mayors and governors that make more than the president of the United States. I sincerely believe Mexican political class is the WORST in the World.

2) In what way do you feel your government helps you?

By allowing US Embassy and Consultates to operate, hence facilitating the pursue of the US Work Visa that has me in the States

3) Do you feel that you (as well as the general public), receive enough accurate information regarding issues that are important to you?

No. Opacity is the rule in the Mexican governments, be it federal, state or city, including congress and courts.

4) Do you feel the need to get involved in any social issue? Why or why not?

Yes, by voting for candidates reflecting my views and supporting equal rights for all citizens.

5) What is your opinion regarding other people on important issues?

They must be heard and if they democratically beat my side, so be it.

6) Given the resources we have, what would an ideal social system would look like to you?

See New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Scandinavian countries.

7) Is the life you are living close to what you imagined it would be? What would you change about it if you could?

Fairly close. If my wife gets a job here, we'll have a fantastic living standard.

8) On a scale from 1-10 (10 being "a lot", maximum, etc.), how often do you think about "intellectual issues"?

5... Around 7 if tennis is intellectual :P

Default Re: Questions Regarding Self, Society and Global Issues

Spanish, male.

You can be as brief or as elaborate as you want.

1) In what way do you feel your government annoys you?

In countless ways. First, by the way they took power, misusing a huge tragedy, a terrorist attack causing almost 200 dead. Then by almost everything they've done. Our president is a liar and an incompetent clown with an ideological agenda who doesn't give a fuck about the nation's welfare, only about power for him and his cronies.

2) In what way do you feel your government helps you?

I don't feel this goverment helps me in any particular way.

3) Do you feel that you (as well as the general public), receive enough accurate information regarding issues that are important to you?

Absolutely not.

4) Do you feel the need to get involved in any social issue? Why or why not?

I'd get involved in some but i guess it isn't so strong a need, as Im not involved in any. If I was rich enough not to have to work for a living I would get involved.

5) What is your opinion regarding other people on important issues?

I don't understand this question.

6) Given the resources we have, what would an ideal social system would look like to you?

I lose no time thinking of ideals. Mankind is far from "ideal" so there will never be an "ideal" system. I don't believe in big goverment, so i'd like to live in a society where goverment doesn't interfere in blatantly private matters and doesn't spend huge amounts in brainwashing the herd into accepting whatever policy they want us to believe is better for us. I'd like a goverment fully accountable for their expenses and more power to the people to check and control how their hard earned money is being spent. I don't believe in collective rights or in the preeminence of the community over the individuals, hence I'd like a society where the rights of the individual would be carved on stone and couldn't ever be curtailed by the usually destructive and empoverishing force of the overwhelmingly mediocre majority.

7) Is the life you are living close to what you imagined it would be? What would you change about it if you could?

I don't think much about the distant future tbh, have never done. I keep on reaching my milestones and that's life for me. If some reveals itself as out of my reach, I forget about it the next second. If I could change something I'd get a huge lotto prize and be mega-rich.

8) On a scale from 1-10 (10 being "a lot", maximum, etc.), how often do you think about "intellectual issues"?[/quote]

about 8 I guess.

Brazilian, male.

1) The Brazilian government is a huge annoyance. It taxes the middle class too much, for a start. It doesn't encourage personal initiative by having ancient methods and a huge bureaucratic system. The antiquated and/or inadequate laws punish the people who want to do things the right way. There's no guarantee that any law will really be enforced, doesn't matter your case. The educational system is neglected. It taxes electronics too much and doesn't tax things that should be heavily taxed, like cars and fuel. The infrastructure of major cities is absolutely neglected too. Well, so many things...

2) Nothing. I do like the fact that the government isn't selling big state-owned companies anymore. This is stupid.

3) What do you mean? Political information? Yeah, but the information doesn't come from the government, that's for sure. About everything else, I find that if we don't go after the information, there's no way.

4) Hummmm I guess, but I also feel my own social "class" is being eradicated, so fighting to keep it alive is a social issue, to some extent. Well, Brazil has a huge disparity in income. A few people are really rich and many people are really poor. That must change, but I don't believe in giving money to the poor directly. I think that fighting for better education is the only way to change the status quo.

5) Couldn't care less for the opinions of the uneducated. Sorry but I don't have time to listen to bullshit.

6) Hummm I'm a firm believer of a technocracy, where the best in their fields would coordinate government actions on those matters. It's absolute bullshit we have a "political class", or in other words, a class who professionalizes in lying, deceiving and making secret agreements. With educated, professional managers, we would have the best allocation possible for resources and people.

7) I guess it's even better than what I imagined a few years ago, although I wish I could live somewhere else.

8) 10. I'm known as being an intellectual person.

Default Re: Questions Regarding Self, Society and Global Issues

American-Male

1) In what way do you feel your government annoys you?

At the moment, it’s the inability to compromise. The endless “debates” at the national and state senates always draw the line at party affiliation. For example, my state of California is in a budget crisis, handing out IOU’s and firing countless state workers. The Republicans are stubbornly refusing new taxes, which would fix the problem at least somewhat, and the Democrats are just blaming the Repubs for the situation, rather than actually doing any work. I get angry when I read the newspaper, luckily it’s going out of business.

2) In what way do you feel your government helps you?

Well obviously, the government provides a lot of services for the general population, such as public schooling and social security. I get annoyed when people complain about creeping socialism, when they shamelessly receive socialist benefits. When I lived in Alaska, a mostly Republican state, every citizen received a check just for living there! And they complain about socialism... ha!

3) Do you feel that you (as well as the general public), receive enough accurate information regarding issues that are important to you?

Internet+Daily Show+Colbert Report+Conan=Everything I need to know

4) Do you feel the need to get involved in any social issue? Why or why not?

I want to get involved, sure, but I’m the laziest person you can find west of the Mississippi, so you can count on me just joining the Facebook group or something. Once I get older and settled, I might consider actively supporting certain causes.

5) What is your opinion regarding other people on important issues?

Hmmm, well obviously everyone is going to have a different opinion, which makes the majority such a great thing. When you lose, you feel less cheated than if a distant body voted... Oh wait, that happens here, too.

6) Given the resources we have, what would an ideal social system would look like to you?

Well some countries are wealthier than others, and the borders are so well established that resources cannot be shuffled at will. Basically, we’d have to start over to create a perfect society, which is impossible.

7) Is the life you are living close to what you imagined it would be? What would you change about it if you could?

I think we imagine lifestyles based on our surroundings, so our ideal situation usually ends up about the same as expected. I’ve moved around a lot as a child, so my life has been lived in chapters, almost. I’m still young, though, so I can’t answer this question yet.

8) On a scale from 1-10 (10 being "a lot", maximum, etc.), how often do you think about "intellectual issues"?

8. I always find myself debating issues with my friends, and I keep myself updated in politics, so I like to think about the big questions. Although, it can be frustrating when things don’t pan out according to your solutions... Oh well, such is life.
