Tough Draw for the Top Seed in Madrid
The draw is great for fans because of terrific matches from early rounds onwards. But as top seed, I thought Tim would have a slightly easier draw. Anyway, here are the projected opponents (I picked players who I think will advance, not necessarily those who are seeded highly):
Rd 1: Bye
Rd 2: Costa (H2H 6-3, Costa won last 2 meetings)
Rd 3: Ljubicic (1-2, Ivan won last 2 including Rotterdam this year) or
Schuettler (3-3, Rainer won last meeting this year in Monte Carlo)
QF: Pimpim Johansson (first meeting) or Canas (1-4, Canas won last 4 including this year at the AO. All matches Canas has won have been very close though)
SF: Nalbandian (1-4, David won last 2 meetings) or
Srichaphan (5-1, only loss came in Madrid in 2002) or
Haas (2-2, 3 out of 4 meetings went to a deciding set) or
Massu (3-1, Tim won last 3 meetings including 1 this year in Monte Carlo)
F: Pavel (2-1, Andrei won this year in Hamburg) or
Ferrero (1-1) or
Safin (2-2) or
Agassi (1-2, haven't played each other since Miami 2000 when Andrei won)
Goodluck Tim!
