i was talking to a friend of mine about national anthems the other day and it turned out we disagreed on almost every issue - be it text, context, rhythm or simply "easy listening". so what is your favorite anthem? i put the ones i like the most in the poll, feel free to post whatever you like and give reasons.

so let me start:

my top three, in no particular order...

italy - great sing-along tune, fun to listen to, pure lust for life in my opinion. a bit too long though.

england - whenever they play football i find myself humming the hymn hours later. very catchy.

russia - there's something about it that just feels so presidential and sublime. it's like a hymn for tsars.

French is genius, I don't care if the lyrics are bloody or whatever, it's so damn catchy

England's is probably the worst. The most uninspiring piece of music I've ever listened to.

I loved hearing the French national anthem at Davis Cup. I loved it even better when I heard the French people next to me struggling to hit the high notes along with the singer.

It's almost a shame that your country has one of the nicest national anthems in the world because you don't even have the taste to appreciate it.

what's not to like about the english hymn? i'm not talking about the chanting and singing by fans, just the melody itself.

on the other hand i do appreciate a german hymn as "god save the queen" used to be the melody of our hymn as well ("heil dir im siegerkranz").

France and Italy are great.

Germany's should be good but I can't hear it without getting a mental picture of Michael Schumacher's smug German face so it's basically dead to me.

To be honest if you put me on the spot and asked me to hum every national anthem I knew I could probably get like 6 or 7.

I don't know where did I hear it or read it, but it seems that a magazine chosen Chilean anthem as second best in the world, after the French one.

Oh Canada! makes me want to march and wave my fist around and punch stuff. and the Spanish one, "Oh spain!" or whatever it's called, sounds like a music box song.
