last year he could not even finish a set but he was winning it against Volandri on a slow claycourt like Hamburg and Volandri had just made semis in Rome beating Federer,Berdych and Gasquet., so its not sure how well he could do it but i think good but of course some steps behind the very best on that surface. I remember he was pretty close to beat Ferrer in Bacerlona two years ago -although Ferrer was not the top player he is now- and had mp if remember well.

Needs to be more aggressive on clay IMO. Against Volandri he was just ripping winners after winners.....needs to play like that.

If he does, he could be dangerous.

Look at some of the top clay-courters:

Nadal, heavy FH
Almagro, heavy groundstrokes
Ferrer, unbelieavale fitness/solid depth
Acasuso, heavy bh
Moya/JCF, big forehands in there day, not so much now.

I'm not so sure of Murray's weapon, he plays so deep but doesn't have the fitness of Ferrer/Canas/Nadal. It's gonna be a tough balance for him on clay i feel, as tournaments go deep.

You make a good point about fitness, especially in gruelling 5 setters.

I can see murray causing major shocks in the clay tournaments beating brilliant players like you have just mentioned in 1 off games but reeling off 5 setters back to back will be tough.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Do people here really think he has that big weapon on clay to manoeuvre his opponent around? As far as i can see, he has great natural hand eye coordination, tremendous balance, hands and retrieval skills. Every now and then he'll suprise a good clay-courter with them having a bad day. But over a tournament i think his lack of a big shot and limited work he puts on the ball will ultimately always cost him.
Yeah I agree with a large part of that mate. Tactical intelligence will always make him dangerous, and I think that could give him the edge over some decent, but rather brainless clay courters...but against the cream of the crop, I'm really sceptical as to how he will perform. I don't think passive play will get him very far and, as Jaap says, I think he needs to be more aggressive if he is to challenge for titles...something he CAN do, but, frustratingly, he seems to play too passively much of the time.

I'm really expecting next to nothing from him this clay season, and if he fails to defend many of his Miami points, he could have the added problem of being unseeded for the next 3 TMS events. As it is, he is still unproven on dirt.

Ok, i guess the comment was abit to far-fetched. But its something about the way murray hits his backhand on a claycourt that reminds me of the great man.

I really think clay will turn out to be his worst surface to be honest. His strength is outlasting (not out-thinking...there's a difference) opponents in points - on clay, where players have the luxury of taking a step back and waiting for the ball, he'll find this a lot tougher. Plus, he has a very flat serve and his 2nd serve doesn't kick enough...good claycourters will jump all over it. the other important strength you need on clay is the ability and willingness to put away short balls (and really put them away) into the corners...I don't think I've seen Murray put away a short ball in his life.

Whoever said he plays like Agassi was kidding, I can only assume. Can you remember how early Agassi took the ball and how agressive he was on all surfaces?!

Default What do you think of Murray's game on clay?

First of all, there's no poll for this thread to avoid monoschematic discussion with arguments only such as "he does great" or "he sucks"

I've seen both his matches in MC and I must say he puzzles me. (beside the fact, that as his favourite slam he chose said French Open, but since 2008 he almost never beat Top 200 player on ATP level). On one hand, he's got great positioning and anticipation, he can play good DTL backhand and vary the pace. His serve is good (for clay), Andy obviously doesn't go for aces here but tries to set up the point. But on the other hand, I think his he doesn't put enough power for clay (how does he plan to hit a winner against Djokovic or Nadal? He will be obliged to do so, as he may not count on high UEs ratio playing against them), his dropshot efficiency wasn't that impressive, and sometimes he looks like he doesn't have a good idea how to take advantage during the rally.

Now, it may be quite unfair, after all his opponents weren't top class players (although Volandri definitely has a clue how to work his way on dirt), he used to bring his B- game when it comes to journeymen, and yes I know he'd been training in Sanchez-Casal Academy, but

do you think he's got the game to be considered as a member of Top 10 on clay, or not?

Why not? What is the clay top 10 for you? There aren't real claycourters anymore.

We'll see this season is all I have to say. He's at least top 15 on clay, I think he is top 10 or somewhere thereabout. His clay court game will improve. He is an all-surface player I think.

he absolutely does, it's the only surface where he doesnt look like an idiot using the drop shot so much. If he beats someone like volandri "one of the best current clay courters," don't you have to take him seriously?

How can he be top 10 or even top 20 clay court player??? Based on what results? Like Murray himself said, he's only played 13 or so clay court matches on ATP tour.
