We’ll never forget. Because this mark made the best year in the carrier of the chilean player. In the Australian Open, only the immensity of Federer could stop the chilean, who played his best tennis during the semi final against the german Tommy Haas with 42 winners and 3 unforced errors. Before, he defeated the world number 2, the spanish player Rafael Nadal.

This start of the season allowed him to jump from the ATP 9 to the ATP 5 in the ranking, his best ranking ever in the ranking. At the end of the previous year, he was number 7, he finished for 2 consecutive year in the top 10 and for the 3rd year he won more than 1 million dollars.

For the journalists in Chile, Who else than Fernando could win the title of the best of the best ?

It wasn’t the only time and it won’t be the last time. During these days, González is in Viña del Mar, a tournament very special for him, he won it in 2002 and 2004. Nevertheless, the last time I was there, I suffered : it was just after his efforts in Australia, he was eliminated by the spanish Albert Montanes in the quarters.

The rest of the year is to win points. Trying to threaten the supremacy of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Playing another time the Masters for the chilean would be another dream.

For the year 2008, he also have challenges. After the loss against Israel, Chile lost in the American zone in the Davis Cup. It only remains to come back in the World Group. In april, the first obstacle will be Mexico or Canada (from Enqvistfan : now we know it will be Canada), If they win, they’ll play the play-offs.

More.. In august, all the sports planet will have the eyes in Beijing. The capital of China will host the Olympic Games. González will go there to reediate the days of glory he shared with Nicolas Massu in Athens.

La marginación por lesión de Fernando González (16º de la ATP) por un mes del circuito no dejó a nadie indiferente, sobre todo porque recién esta comenzando la temporada 2008. De todos modos las noticias son esperanzadoras para el chileno, ya que según confirmó a La Tercera.com su preparador físico, Carlos Burgos, su retorno a las canchas es prácticamente seguro para el ATP de Las Vegas que comienza en marzo.

De acuerdo a lo explicado por el PF del "Bombardero de La Reina", la inflamación en la inserción abdominal de su pupilo es una lesión menor que no representaría mayor riesgo, aunque se le recomendó un periodo de reposo extenso para evitar que pasara a mayores.

"Esta 'lesión', que yo llamaría más dolencia, se le detectó a tiempo mediante una resonancia magnética. Fernando en este momento está bien, completamente asintomático. Tiene una pequeña inflamación y un pequeño dolor en la zona que se insertan los abdominales, pero puede correr y hacer un montón de cosas sin problemas", señaló el PF de la primera raqueta nacional.

Burgos además recordó que "esto ya nos pasó hace un año después de Australia cuando llegó con un hombro cargado. Pero es parte de la competencia, no es ningún misterio. Los jugadores del circuito tenístico a un nivel tan exigente están siempre expuestos a este tipo de lesiones. No tiene nada de anormal, es lo que uno ve constantemente en el mundo".

Pensando en el retorno de su dirigido a los top ten del circuito, el preparador físico de González se mostró muy optimista asegurando que "lo más probable, después de las conversaciones con el doctor que llega este lunes, es que esté bien para jugar en Las Vegas (desde el próximo 3 de marzo). Creo que sería lo más razonable considerando que es un torneo que le servirá de antesala para los Masters Series de Indian Wells y Miami, y es casi seguro que esté ahí".

Respecto al descanso de casi un mes que se le dio, el cual retrasó su posible retorno al grupo de los mejores diez de la ATP, el PF explicó que no se debió a la gravedad de la lesión, sino que "se dio la circunstancia de detectar esto justo a tiempo y aprovechamos para asumir que necesitaba un descanso. Junto con el cuerpo médico acordamos que lo mejor era que parara más considerando que San José y Memphis no son torneos tan importantes".

De esta forma, González tiene buenas chances de retomar el lugar que perdió tras la abrupta eliminación en el Abierto de Australia. De ganar el título del torneo que se disputará en marzo en el estado norteamericano de Nevada, el "Bombardero de La Reina" podría escalar hasta el puesto décimo, aunque para ello los que lo anteceden en el escalafón no deberían avanzar rondas en sus respectivos torneos.

Tennis champ Fernando González has blasted his way through the rankings to become South America’s top pro.

The professional tennis circuit is buzzing with anticipation over the sport’s upcoming tournaments and its hottest competitors. And the spotlight is shining bright on Chilean native Fernando González.

The winner of eight Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) titles, González is now ranked No. 7 in the world and is the second-highest Latino, just under Rafael Nadal. The highest position González has attained on the ATP Race was fifth place in 2007, after he got to the Australian Open finals with trainer Larry Stefanki, but lost to the world’s No.1 player, Roger Federer.

Feña, as he is known, has been able to get to the quarter-finals of the four existing Grand Slams. González’s biggest goal was to classify for the Tennis Master’s Cup 2007 held in Shanghai, and he achieved it. With that accomplished, he brought this past season to a spectacular end, broke a two-year streak of bad luck in which he hadn’t obtained a single title, and won the Peking Open after defeating Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

There is definitely some strategic planning in the works for this season. Hispanic caught up with González days before the Sony Ericsson Open and got a glimpse of his year ahead.

Hispanic Magazine: What is the outcome of 2007?
Fernando González: The truth is that 2007 was full of ups and downs, but I can say that, all in all, it had a positive outcome. The fact that I was able to get to the Grand Slam finals, and that I classified at the Master in Shanghai is no small feat.

HM: Did you ever imagine that you would be the only Latin American at the Masters Series in Shanghai?
FG: No. Not at all, since there are more and more Latinos competing each year. Plus, David Nalbandian was very close to getting there, too. In any case, the important thing was to have been there, though I would’ve loved to have more Latinos present. It’s very good for the region.

HM: How did it feel to defeat Roger Federer, on the first match of the Masters?
FG: Having won a very tight match ... after so many defeats made me evolve as a player. Everybody wants to defeat No. 1, and achieving that gives a boost to your confidence.

HM: To end 2007 as one of the best players in the world was one of your main goals, and you achieved it. What was the key to that?
FG: The key was to become a better player every day, and of course experience had an important role in it.

HM: If you had to highlight three moments of the past season, what would they be?
FG: Finals in Australia, Finals in Rome and defeating Federer.

HM: In 2008 you will have to defend many points. What type of pressure does this put on you?
FG: You always go up and down on the ranking. I just hope I will always have to defend points!

HM: They say that the most complicated thing is not to get there, but to stay there. But it seems you were able to achieve both. To what do you attribute these achievements?
FG: Working hard every day is very important in being able to stay on top, and improving your tennis skills, because someone will always want to take your place.

HM: How much has the influence of Larry Stefanki and Carlos Burgos affected this professional growth?
FG: A lot. With Larry I’ve been able to improve many things in a short period of time, and I’m still improving. On the other hand, with Carlos Burgos I was able to get into a physical shape I had never been in before.

HM: The Sony Ericsson Open is a tournament that brings satisfaction to many. What does this event mean to your agenda?
FG: This is the most important tournament, after the Grand Slams, especially for us Latinos since we feel at home.

HM: What goals have you set for this starting season?
FG: Hopefully to be able to participate in the Master tournament again, and what I want more than anything else is to win a Grand Slam.

HM: With all the traveling you do, do you have time to relax?
FG: I make time whenever I can.

HM: Do you get to visit places other than the tennis courts when you travel?
FG: The truth is I do, but not really as a tourist! I try to take something from every city I visit. I can’t conceive of the idea of going around the world without getting to know it. There are magnificent places that are worth seeing.

HM: Before the pre-season, it’s key to find a place to relax. Where do you vacation?
FG: I almost always choose places where there are the least amount of people possible. The circuit demands a lot of energy and those places give me a lot of peace and revitalize me.

HM: What are the positives and the negatives of the demands brought by the professional circuit?
FG: The positive thing is that you never stop playing, and that, in a way, allows me to always be a child, doing what I do best. And in that way, I feel like I’m not working. I enjoy what I do very much. The bad thing is to have to travel so much. That forces me to be far away from my loved ones, and likewise, I can’t devote as much time to them as I would like to.

HM: Once retired, do you think you’ll stay in the world of tennis somehow?
FG: I will, 100 percent, since it’s what I like to do most.

El chileno Fernando González ha vivido en el 2007 la mejor temporada de su carrera y acabará la sesión séptimo del mundo tras esforzarse al máximo. Por eso, cuando el circuito del tenis camina desmadejado por las acusaciones de partidos amañados, el jugador de Santiago cree que un "triunfo es algo irremplazable" y que no se compra con nada.

Antes de comenzar sus vacaciones en compañía de su novia, la argentina Gisela Dulko, por el sur de su país, y en una entrevista, González explicó que espera en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín volver a pisar el podio y que ahora se encuentra en plena madurez.

P. Después de alcanzar la final del Abierto de Australia y lograr el Masters, ¿Qué conclusiones saca de la temporada que acaba?

- R. Creo que ha sido una temporada muy buena a pesar de que hubo momentos muy difíciles como fue durante el verano en Estados Unidos, pero el balance es más que positivo. Jugué la final de un Grand Slam, llegué al Masters y a la final de Roma, justo en un momento cuando me sentí jugando muy mal en arcilla y era un gran torneo. Ha sido muy positivo y eso me deja muy tranquilo para el año que viene.

P. Algunos piensan que el suizo Roger Federer, con 26 años, se está haciendo mayor y que no le queda tanto en la cima. Usted tiene 27 ¿qué piensa de todo eso?

- R Estoy teniendo mi mejor momento a los 27 años, hay otros jugadores que lo han tenido a los 22 y a mi edad están ya de capa caída, pero me siento un afortunado de que haya sido así porque tengo más experiencia, estoy más maduro y valoro mucho más el momento por el que estoy pasando.

P. Acabar entre los ocho primeros del mundo es un objetivo para todos los grandes jugadores. Para usted ¿qué ha significado?

- R. Para mi es muy importante, jugar a este nivel y terminar cinco seis o siete del mundo, tras participar en torneos muy importantes y a un gran nivel. Pero llegar a este torneo (Copa Masters) es una meta que todo tenista tiene en mente. Y terminar tan arriba te hace crecer como persona, como jugador. Y mientras más tiempo estés ahí, mejor.

P. Para un profesional de tenis ¿que es lo que más se odia del circuito y lo que mejor sabor de boca deja?

- R. Lo que más se odia es viajar tanto y estar mucho tiempo fuera de la casa, creo es algo común. Pero lo que más me gusta es que uno siente que siempre que está jugando tiene una motivación especial por su trabajo. Esto, además de un trabajo es un juego, pero uno tiene que tener mucha disciplina también para poder rendir mucho más. Entonces, lo que más valoro es la competencia y el jugar.

P. ¿Cómo lleva entrenarse duramente, cuando además hay tanta competitividad y prevalecen solo los que mejor se preparan?

- R. A mi me gusta entrenarme, no siete horas diarias, aunque no me desagrada si tengo que hacerlo mucho, pero con el tiempo uno va aprendiendo que la cantidad no es lo principal. Quizás hay un momento, cuando uno tiene 18 ó 20 años, que tiene mucho volumen pero ya cuando uno va siendo más mayor hay que ir dosificándose mas y hay que elegir calidad antes que cantidad.

P. ¿Qué importancia le da al dinero?

- R. Uno tiene que vivir de algo, pero yo soy un agradecido porque puedo vivir de lo que más me gusta hacer.

P. ¿Hasta qué punto ha puesto usted como objetivo el año que viene los JJ.OO. de Pekín? y ¿qué recuerdos le vienen a la mente cuando piensa en los de Atenas?

- R. Creo que es algo muy importante, muy grande. Unos JJ.OO. y un Gran Slam son algo que no tienen comparación, son diferentes, pero para mi es una meta llegar a los JJ.OO. y tratar de volver a pisar el podio, eso es lo que más quiero. De allí (Atenas) tengo los recuerdos más lindos que he tenido en mi carrera. Fue una semana muy difícil porque jugamos individual y dobles (con Nicolás Massú) y nos forzamos al máximo, pero fue una de las semanas más importantes de mi carrera.

P. El tenis está pasando por un momento difícil con multitud de acusaciones de partidos amañados para las apuestas. Cada día sale alguien con una nueva acusación. ¿Cómo vive un jugador como usted todo esto, y como intenta abstraerse?

- R. El tenis es un deporte individual. Lo que esté pasando o no son individualidades que no van al caso de todo el circuito. Para mi no hay nada que reemplace un triunfo, nada que lo pueda reemplazar. Yo me entreno día a día para tratar de ganar y eso es lo que más me llena. Las cosas que pasan o no pasan, o que se dice que pueden pasar, son individualidades de algunos pocos, por lo que el tenis no tiene que ser culpable. Me disgusta que se hable tanto de las cosas malas y no de las buenas. Se hablaba de que se arreglaban partidos, que ha pasado una vez. Hay cien torneos al año, y se dice que pasó una vez, molesta un poco que salgan noticias por cosas negativas. Es mucho más fácil hacer las noticias por cosas negativas más que por las positivas.

Vuelve al circuito en dos semanas más.

SANTIAGO.- Luego de las malas noticias entregadas por Nicolás Massú (97°) y Paul Capdeville (107°), (cayeron en primera ronda en Buenos Aires y San José, respectivamente), la primera raqueta chilena, Fernando González (15°) supo de una buena.

El tenista de La Reina está con el alta médica para regresar al circuito y lo hará en el Torneo de Las Vegas en dos semanas más.

El 15 del orbe presentaba molestias en su abdomen desde que fue campeón del ATP de Viña del Mar, lo que lo obligó a postergar su viaje a Estados Unidos.

"Fernando ha estado bien, sin dolor y su lesión ha evolucionado de muy buena manera. El seguirá con tratamiento kinésico y ejercicios de elongación, pero ya puede comenzar a jugar un poco de tenis a partir de hoy. La próxima semana le haremos un nuevo control y ahí se le practicará una última ecotomografía para ver cómo reaccionó la zona afectada con sus entrenamientos de tenis, y así viajar más tranquilo a Estados Unidos", aseguró el doctor Roberto Yáñez, quien lo trató en la clínica MEDS.

Por su parte, el preparador físico del jugador, Carlos Burgos, confirmó que ya se decidió que el retorno será en Las Vegas dentro de dos semanas.

"Tras el alta médica, se decidió en conjunto con el jugador que su regreso fuese en Las Vegas, un torneo que es antesala al Master Series de Indian Wells, y que le servirá para poder entrenar junto a Larry (Stefanski, su técnico) y así ponerse a punto para llegar bien a un torneo grande", sostuvo Burgos.

"Fernando ha estado asintomático y el tratamiento fisioterapéutico, que respetó a cabalidad tras la lesión en su abdomen, ha sido el ideal, incluso se decidió que sea acompañado en este viaje a Las Vegas por el kinesiólogo de MEDS, Sergio Valdivia, para continuar con su trabajo de fisioterapia y elongación, que es muy necesario", agregó el preparador físico.
