Rios on Transworld sport this week.

They showed plenty of old clips from Marcelo, then some of him doing his radio show with plenty of smiles, hitting on the court and an interview - he spoke in Spanish, and the commentator spoke 'over him'.

He said that he thinks he made it too soon on the tour - he made number 1 after e years turning pro - that he never had time to savour what he'd done, almost didn't understand it. He then said that he played when injured, and he shouldn't have - he should have stopped when things began to bother him. He also said he was ok with the media - some journos were fine with him, others weren't, and that they should respect when he was the 'public' Rios and the private Rios.

He realises that his best days are behind him, but he continues to hope he can play again. He says that the desire and enjoyment of playing tennis is still with him, and if he didn't play tennis, his life would have an empty part.

RIOS UNDERGOES MEDICAL INTERVENTION

Marcelo Rios underwent a minor medical procedure to overcome his back problems. The procedure will allow him to play without pain at least for a couple of weeks. Rios could start practicing tennis either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The former world number one said his manager keeps working to get wild cards from the organizers of the Master Series tournaments of Rome and Hamburg. Marcelo wants to play the Master Series as a way to prepare for the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Ríos trains again

The pains in the back took to Marcelo again Ríos to the pavilion. "And he had never had so much fright", he admitted the left-handed one that underwent yesterday a blockade facetario (infiltration of articulations). I "Know that it is not a long term solution, but it will stop the pain for a couple of months, it will remove all that of the back" a little, he told the former number one of world that had to keep rest yesterday.

In any event, Ríos hopes make tennis tomorrow again. Everything thinking of the wild cards that he requested to the Masters Series of Rome and Hamburg. "But I don't still have news in this respect. My agent is seeing the topic and I don't care that in the newspapers they say that they won't give" me.

As the own Ríos, the panorama it advances it is complicated. The director from Rome, Sergio Palmieri, advanced since it will privilege the young local tennis players. In Germany they are more drastic: the petition has not arrived them on behalf of Chile and, although it arrives, they are already assured for local players.

With everything, Ríos would return to the courts for the World cup of Teams of Düsseldorf in that it was included by Nicolás Massú, first racket of the country.

ADIOS FOR RIOS Former world number one Marcelo Rios admits he is close to bringing the curtain down on his career and will come to a definite decision in the near future.

The Chilean has undergone back surgery twice in the last six months following injury and his subsequent inactivity has seen him drop to 739th in the world rankings.

"I'm close to retirement and I've been thinking about that for a long time. I know I'm looking for excuses to avoid it - I am cheating myself," he said on Chilean television.

"I know I can't be among the best in the world anymore, it's impossible dreaming about being the number one again. Physically I haven't been fine"

The 28-year-old left-hander, a claycourt specialist, was world number in 1997-98 and won 18 titles in his career after turning professional in 1994.

"Once I retire I would like to stay close to tennis. This sport has been my life and gave me all I have," he added.

Orizola supports decision of Ríos
It dates edition: 30-04-2004

"He wants to stay in a competitive level, but sometimes the 'chassis' he doesn't accompany, no matter how much you have an excellent motor. If he is planning to retire, it is better than he makes it in glory and majesty. I find that he is making the correct" thing, the doctor pointed out Alejandro Orizola regarding Marcelo's announcement Ríos who said to be more near the retirement that could take place after Düsseldorf. The doctor explains that several times the topic has conversed with Ríos and that "the problems in its back are not overcome and their longings to play the they have taken to be jumped some stages. I know that for him this it should be a very painful decision and that therefore he should be meditating her a lot", it concluded.

Cheering News

Marcelo Ríos announced yesterday that he requested a wild card for the challenger of San Remus (clay, US $25 thousand) that will begin next week. The former number one of the world will train during the week in Santiago to see in what conditions he/she is and this way to define if it converges to Düsseldorf. The tournament of San Remus would be good to the left-handed one as preparation for the Glass of the World, where it was invited by Nicolás Massú and Fernando González to be part of the national team that should confirm the title for teams.
