Well, I was sure that he was going to climb untill he feels that he can do it. It's no surprise, I mean think about it, he climbed till 5.000m. It's great !!! High altitude is very tricky and dangerous.
How many of you have reached at least 2.000m?

So, way to go! It's a great achievement for a beginner

Me too It's typical Marat - scaring us to death and wins at the end (5-setter presumably) I think that he has done this trip the way he wanted. Proved to himself whatever he needed, and lets hope he'll be happy and smiling now

I haven't climbed and I'm afraid of mountains... I couldn't live without a sea/river/lake for over a month or so.
It's of course a great achievement for him and he at least seems to be happy with what he achieved (and not disappointed with it ending so).

Quite frankly I don't know what scares Marat more: the thought of climbing another 3,000 m or the thought of falling under Top 100 at the beginning of next season...

(ok, I know some people would say Marat has dropped out of 100th before and he managed to come back, etc. etc. But c'mon if he still wants to play professional tennis and be on the top level as he claims, then this prospect should have probably concerned him a little)

It's his life so if he had a good time and he was happy, then it is certainly not my business to judge or criticize him. However, I sincerely hope that this decision is not a parallel indication of his current attitude in his career. Like ok, he had announced that he was determined to climb the mountain, then after reaching a certain point (which was arguably a considerable success), he decided that he was already content with what he had already achieved and had no motivation to push it any further. Ok, before anyone would like to jump on me, I am well aware that climbing one of the highest mountains in the world (of which Marat is a complete amateur), and tennis (which he is/was one of the best) are completely different things. And whatever his decision is, whether to go up or step down, it's his life and he has all the rights to do whatever he wants. But heck, his mindset in this whole Cho Oyu craze is just like repeating a pattern of his mindset in tennis we have seen from him for the past few months... confused and half-committed.

(I hope he proves me wrong in the next tournaments)

Okay, am I getting something wrong? Where has he climbed?? He has only been driving and walking up some smaller hills by the roadside until now. I gather he realised that really he had a wrong idea of what high altitude climbing is all about, mainly extreme sufferance and living in large dirty camps with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I still think this Abramov wanted PR and did not correctly inform him.
We can't say he has made much of a success driving all the way to Drivers' Base Camp only to drive back again. It's sad and it's surely humiliating to have shown such an obvious lack of knowledge and boasting about "knowing this was no beach holiday" and how he "had always wanted to do this".

Hallo everyone! I've been away for a while and got all the last events in peaces, so could someone sumarize it for me, please? I read the two letters in the official website, I got kind confused, is he palying the rest of the season still? Is it for real that he will come to South America? OGM if it is true, I will be so close but so far away at the same! Danm it!
Any way, don't know what is going on!

Geez, I go away on holiday for 10 days with no access to the internet and return to find Marat has been (partly) up a mountain and has come down again...! Sounds like he's had a good break and a sensible decision not to continue to the top. As Curls said, he's bound to catch a lot of flak for not completing the climb but it seems it would have been madness.
Reading between the lines, I would have thought there was little chance he'd have been picked for the DC semi final and I agree with someone's comment that he probably had a bit of pain in his wrist and thought that this was a good chance to get away. He's his own person which is most of his charm, I guess, but lordy...I hate to think what'll happen to his ranking. Hey ho...the joys of following this guy!

Well, flak or no flak, at least he realised it's not a walk in the park to go all the way up a proper mountain without training and having decided only 1-2 weeks prior to actually going up and maybe now he'll go into secret training to climb it again next year

or maybe he'll just stick to fishing
