Front pointing is just the name of a technique for walking up slopes on crampons one of the easiest and simplest methods to learn - believe me - I learned it on an ice field on a volcano in South America- it's about rhythm. In the days between arrival at the base camp and the actual climb, there will be plenty of practice. This is really not beyond someone who is as fit and strong as Marat - he WILL go to the summit, I feel sure that is why he's there - Marat will not be sitting in base camp waiting for the others to come down...no way! - and as I have already expressed my view I will only repeat - davai Marat - good on ya boy, for making the break and doing something you WANT to do....I am sO happy for him!

I had this sudden vision while reading that phrase, of marat sitting at base camp, in an apron, heating up the baked beans

Re: Marat news and articles
But we all know Marat can;t cook - he may even set fire to the tent..he is MUCH safer making the ascent..and the 'real' pros think he can do it - so who are we to suggest that he can't?
KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Russia's Marat Safin will bid to scale the world's sixth highest mountain, giving the former world number one a fresh challenge which looks set to rule him out of this month's Davis Cup semi-final against Germany.
Safin is part of an eight-member Russian expedition which is due to leave Nepal on Friday to climb Cho Oyu, the 8,201-metre (26,906 ft) mountain on the Nepal-Tibet border, a Nepalese hiking official told Reuters.
" This is an interesting climb but he has (had) very good physical exercise," Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Nepal Mountaineering Association said on Thursday.
"He is young and energetic although the climb is challenging. I'm hopeful he will succeed," said the official, who also heads Asian Trekking, the agency providing logistic support to the expedition.

But maybe the baked beans will help him with the "ascension"... you all know what beans can do. So he might just fly past the others.

Re: Marat news and articles
All the way or not but how he can do a trip like that with his ankles? Will he have them taped all the time?

probably. the mountain climbing boots are pretty tough, rigid stuff though, so it might give some support as well. please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hiking/climbing boots are designed for ankle support, reducing shock/stress on the knees etc.
My ankles are fucked, but boots usually provide enough support, even though I've only done normal hiking, dunno about mountain climbing

It was just a joke. Doesn't have to be factual. Lots of humour on this forum are not based on all facts anyway.
Well, I know that in reality climbing up Cho Oyu is no joke. But if I were Marat, I'd have done the same thing. Why not? Ok, it's not professional tennis-wise like many have said. But instead of just toiling meaninglessly on the mundane tennis courts for another two months (I think everybody agrees here that he's not going to win every single match and sweep all the titles this fall anyway), Marat is doing something that will contribute to his lifetime experience. Dangerous yes. And it might affect his physique as a tennis player afterwards. But Marat is a person before he's a tennis player. So... I'm happy for him. And this proves to me that Marat is almost by nature a somewhat Byronic figure I always thought he is.
