Re: Lleyton and Bec
(here is the new idea article that Lauren from Lleytonland was so kind for typing (:
BEC AND MIA CHANGED MY LIFE
Tennis champion Lleyton Hewitt has had his world turned upside down by marriage and fatherhood. He reveals the joy he feels when he looks into his daughter’s eyes.
He is Australia’s most controversial and combative tennis star, an athlete who explodes with energy and aggression. But with the help of a beautiful blonde wife and a baby called Mia, Lleyton Hewitt is a changed man.
Today, in a fascinating world exclusive interview, Lleyton has managed to tear himself away from Bec and Mia to open his heart for the first time, revealing his immense love for the wife and daughter who have given him a new life.
‘I don’t think you can ever imagine what it’s actually going to be like,’ says Lleyton, who is currently in Miami. ‘But it’s been fantastic. We love being a little family – Bec, myself, and now obviously Mia,’ he says, eyes softening at the thought of his precious baby daughter.
‘Every day is a new day, and we learn something more about her and watch her grow up and do different things each day. It really puts tennis and life in perspective. Now family is my number one priority-my girls come first, even before tennis. But it will be fantastic to win another major with my wife and baby around me.’
In the past Lleyton would obsess about his game alone in a hotel room, but now he helps Bec, who’s dedicated her life to travelling the tennis circuit with her husband, tend to their baby. And when it comes time to change four-month-old Mia’s nappy, it is just as likely to be 25-year-old Lleyton who does the dirty work.
‘I’ve done my fair share of nappies, that’s for sure. I’m not quite a pro, but I’m getting better,’ he grins proudly. Still marvelling at the miracle of his daughter, he tenderly describes how he sometimes he just sits and watches Mia sleep, mesmerised by her innocence. “ I watch her sleep a lot of the time. She goes to sleep in my arms or I’ll creep in and see her.
“The hours go by so quickly. Everyone keeps telling us to take in every moment, because babies keep changing and the years fly by,’ he says smiling. Lleyton knows just how fast life can change. Less than 18 months ago, in late October 2004, he was ‘kicked in the guts’ by his then-fiancée Kim Clijsters, who ended their engagement just four months before the planned wedding.
Yet her devastating decision cleared the way for him to meet the woman he was clearly meant to marry- Home and Away star and Dancing with the Stars winner Bec Cartwright.
Bec and Lleyton had first been introduced at a Starlight Cup match in Adelaide five years before. But in December 2004, they ran into each other at a party in Sydney and sparks flew. They began dating.
Just six weeks later, on January 30, Lleyton proposed to Bec with an extravagant $200,000 Tiffany diamond ring.
He had just lost the coveted Australian Open to Marat Safin – but he was bursting with happiness as the soapie star agreed to be his wife.
The whirlwind kept spinning when, just a few months later, Bec revealed she was pregnant.
The two married in a lavish Opera House ceremony on July 21, with Bec’s baby bump showing under her stunning wedding dress. She gave birth to little Mia four months later.
The couple hadn’t even been together a year as they welcomed Mia, yet both know despite the rapidity of their romance they’ve made the right decision. ‘I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,’ Lleyton says frankly.
‘Bec and I have a great relationship. I feel like I can talk about anything with her, and vice versa. And being with Bec over the last year and a half has been great for me. She’s a fantastic girl and I’m really lucky to have her.
‘It’s really a lot to have this downtime that we have away from the tennis courts.’
As our beautiful intimate and tender pictures reveal, Lleyton’s favourite ‘downtime’ is splashing with his baby in the hotel pool after training. He delighted Bec and other sunbathers as Mia stretched and splashed in the water cradled in her daddy’s arms.
Bec, the perfect mum, was always close by, holding a big towel up to protect her beloved baby from the glare of the sun.
The family then relaxed by the pool with Lleyton’s parents Cherilyn and Glynn, who are their constant companions.
Dressed in a tiny red bikini and miniskirt, Bec also revealed her amazing post-baby body.
For the 22-year-old, returning to her normal weight wasn’t hard. She has always led a healthy lifestyle, and when she left Home and Away she said she was looking forward to organising proper meals for herself and Lleyton, which she continues to do even on the road.
It has also been easier for her because she was in peak physical condition when she fell pregnant, after the intense dance workouts during her time on Dancing with the Stars plus regular gym sessions. Now she and Mia go for power walks with the pram to maintain her great figure.
However Bec has given up acting, promising to stay by Lleyton’s side and travel with him and Mia on the tennis circuit. The girl who once wished upon a star for a perfect husband joked recently: ‘I’ve been training hard to a tennis wife.’
She vowed to Lleyton on their wedding day in a poem she composed especially for him: ‘I’ll take good care of you, everyday.’
‘I admire in Lleyton what I admire about all men in my life, including my dad,’ Bec revealed last year.
‘Being committed and dedicated to your career, having a sense of humour and showing passion and honesty. My family loves Lleyton to bits because he looks after me so well. He’s passionate on court, but he’s a real family kind of guy.’
Although the constant presence of his parents when he travels is thought to have caused tension with former fiancée Kim, sweet Bec’s breezy nature and Aussie background have made her instantly part of the family. ‘It was fate,’ Cherilyn says of Lleyton and Bec’s whirlwind marriage and new little family. ‘She’s lovely and we are all on the same wavelength.’
Bec refers to Cherilyn as Mia’s nanny. She’s also become close to her sister-in-law Jaslyn, who she calls Aunty Jaz.
The whole extended family dotes on Mia. When Bec ducked off for a swim in the pool, Cherilyn held the baby as Lleyton planted a kiss on her tiny lips and brushed her cheek.
Not to be outdone, Lleyton’s dad did his bit too, blowing raspberries on Mia’s arm for extra entertainment, and later helping Bec change the baby.
While some extended families might drive each other crazy – travelling at such close quarters - for the Hewitts it works well. ‘Everything has fallen into place for us,’ Bec said recently.
‘I feel like we have been like this forever.’ And while the spotlight is again on Lleyton’s slipping rankings, the newly mature athlete still believes in himself, no longer seeming rankled by any backlash.
In January he crashed out of the Australian Open early, then was accused of snubbing a Paralympian fundraiser, which he didn’t even know was on. But he shrugs philosophically.
‘I’m used to negativity now. It’s just a matter of trying to focus, and be strong through it more than anything. I’ve got so many supporters behind me, it’s fantastic.
‘The Australian public have been great and have come out and supported me the whole time. It’s always a joy to play in Australia, and very easy to get motivated for.’ But while the former number one is determined to regain his ranking, for now his only focus is his ‘little family’.
Bec and Lleyton have both hinted that it won’t be long before there are more babies on the way, such is their love of parenthood.
‘When I look at my little girl, I just fill up with love,’ Bec says. ‘It won’t be long before I get pregnant again.’ Her loving husband adds: ‘Fatherhood is fantastic. I want a big family. To look after Mia, and to try to teach her everything I know about life, there really aren’t any words to describe it.
‘The biggest thing for me was the amazement of seeing a child of Bec and myself born – someone to look after for the rest of our lives. That’s probably the most amazing thing,’ he says, smiling.
‘And right now, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.’
BABY LOVE
While the people would find taking a baby around the world a nightmare, Bec says that, with the support of Lleyton’s parents, it has been quite easy.
‘She’s such a good baby, I didn’t think there’d be any troubles when we took her on the road,’ Bec says. ‘The flight attendants were so impressed with her, they didn’t hear a sound out of her the whole flight. So far she’s been a great traveller and has not been disrupted by the time differences.’
Friends say baby Mia is also blessed with a beautiful, loving temperament. ‘You could be having a down day, but as soon as you see one of her smiles then you feel better,’ proud mum Bec coos.
‘They are determined to bring her everywhere with them. She’s so precious and they never want her out of their sight,’ says a family friend, unsurprised by the Hewitts’ decision to take Mia on the tennis curcuit.
DADDY COOL
Lleyton is fiery, ferociously competitive and has been criticised at times for being arrogant and unlikeable. ‘He’s stubborn and has a hard time compromising,’ a friend says. However it seems that Bec’s calming influence and fatherhood have given the 25-year-old a new maturity. Now he is at peace with himself, and endlessly patient with Mia.
‘I always wanted to do things in a hurry before,’ Lleyton admits. ‘I always played out of age group and I always wanted to get the best out of myself as early as possible. I was never intimidated by anyone and I played hard. Now though, if I lose a match it doesn’t hurt as much when you can go home and see your kid.’
He is also inspired by his wife’s sunny nature. ‘She’s so bubbly and hasn’t a bad word to say about anybody. She just enjoys life day by day.
HOT MAMA!
Toned, tanned and taut, the new mama looked red hot in her skimpy bikini and tiny skirt during their poolside family day. ‘Most of the baby weight has gone already,’ says a friend, amazed by how fast Bec has bounced back to her sexy shape.
Bec’s body looks even more stunning post baby because breastfeeding has given a new curviness to her naturally slim frame. ‘My bust increases a couple of sizes when I miss a feed,’ Bec reveals.
The star used to love wearing halternecks, such as the colourful dress she wore to the Logies, but can’t wear them now because of the breast pads. ‘You wouldn’t want one to fall out,’ Bec laughs. ‘ And you’ve also got to pick tops for easy access for feeding. I find it more difficult to find clothes to wear now that I’m breastfeeding than when I was pregnant.’
Fortunately there are lots of opportunities for her to wear her red bikini on tour.
