I think Oz is a bad example when talking about ratings because most of it was shown late at night (or in re-runs the next day). And none of it was shown on a major network like CBS or NBC. Last year the US Open their numbers were up and the mens final had the highest raiting since 2000 or 2001 I think. I don't disagree that the average American (non die-hard fan) is more familiar with American players and will tune in more if Americans are playing. But I don't think it's specific to any one player. Maybe if ESPN and the USTA did a better job promoting non-Americans their numbers wouldn't be so dismal.
During the US Open series, Andre and Andy were the only big names to play, internationally or otherwise. Injuries and time-off after Wimbledon kept Europeans, etc. away. It is not soley ESPN's responsibility to promote them, they need to play in the US leading up to the Open as well.
