Not sure where you're getting that from. Both Toni and Rafa have said Rafa doesn't pay Toni. Obviously Toni earns money by virtue of coaching Rafa but it is through being a business partner in Nadal's father's business. When Nadal was around 14/15 (maybe younger?) they agreed that Nadal's father would run the business, with half belonging to Toni, whilst Toni would coach RN full time instead. No doubt the "business" extends to a lot more than just the glass/windows business it initially was. But anyway, unlike most coaches Toni won't have a contract and get a strict % of prize money.

His reasoning is if he was getting paid directly by Nadal (rather than have this arrangement with his brother) it could change the balance of power in his relationship with Rafa...

Magnus Norman deserves at least half of Söderling's and Wawrinkas earnings, imo. Where would they be without him?

I'm not a If Toni deserves half of Rafa's earnings, then so does Magnus (EDIT: i.e. of Robin's and Stan's income). It would only be fair considering how much he has contributed to their earnings.

But I prefer the men.

There must be at least one compassionate coach willing to do pro bono work for JG to help him refine his Ivanisevic/Ivanovic hybrid serve.

But I prefer the men.
The coach doesn't do much. On court the player is on his own and are not even allowed to get coaching from the coach. Dull pays uncle Mafiosi 50% because he coaches him on court illegally. That is wrong.

The player is alone and has to do everything themselves. Even off court they have to do all the physical work. At pro level technique is formed and it doesn't change. A coach is more like a companion and advisor. A coach is not even crucial. Federer has played without a coach for instance. Even caddies are allowed to give advice in golf during play and they get 10%. Why should it be different in tennis when coaches can't even talk to players during the match?

If the coach is not so important, why did Stanislas and Söderling improve so much after hiring Norman? Why didn't they play on that level without Norman's help? If Wavrinka and Robin doubled their income thanks to Magnus, does he not deserve 50%? He's entitled to the fruits of his labour.

this sounds about right.

This is pretty good, but what about travel expenses? Does the player cover that as well? I imagine travel is a huge expense. Perhaps the real big shot players have their own plane or whatever and the coach can ride along.

The coach does so much. You can't go it alone. They devise strategies, get them mentally strong, are a sounding board, etc etc. People thrive when they have support. It's vital to improve and know what to do to get better.

From what I've read, the player pays for the coach travel and hotel.
