A wooden spoon is essentially the person who got "last place" in a tournament.
In Buenos Aires this year Fognini lost to Ferrer in the final, Robredo lost to Fognini in the SF, Haase lost to Robredo in the QF, Berlocq lost to Haase in R2, and Sousa lost to Berlocq in R1. So this makes Sousa the wooden spoon since he was the last person in the losing chain.
Hope that makes sense, it's difficult to explain.
