Default Mercedes-Benz Cup tournament stinks...

I hate to put down tournaments that I go to, but honestly this is my second year going, and just like last year, this year was pretty sucky. I went this year, because it seemed as though higher quality players would be playing...like Roddick, Agassi. This year, again, most of the top players withdrew before or during their matches. So today, Wednesday, I get there and what matches do I see? Only two singles matches (on a 2nd round day). One of which included Ricardo Mello vs. Hadad?!?! The other was Hrbaty vs. Hernych. Was excited to see Hrbaty, but I mean he steam rolled Hernych of course so that was over in no time lol>

Furthermore, this tournament only has two courts...a stadium, and a grand stand...period! Compared to other So. Cal. tournaments that have several courts, and at least a few practice courts. This one only has one practice court, and it is fenced in! The only time I saw Agassi today was during his 2:00 or so practice, and basically he was swarmed by everyone so you couldn't see him anyway...not that the fence helped either I mean, if they even had like three practice courts and I could just sit and watch some of my favorites practicing, it would be ok. But just one measly practice court? Quite a joke.

So, basically this post is just to let out my frustrations . Quite frustrated in myself for taking the time to drive two hours to a tournament I didn't particularly like last year, but gave another chance this year (since I had free tickets). I hope those that I gave some of my free tickets to here had a good time, I mean at least it was free.

Lastly, no other tournament I've been to have I seen tickets for the night session cost more than tickets than a day session. Are you serious?!? I mean, somebody paid $40 just to see Haas vs. Malisse and the Brian Twins play doubles? Sure I like Haas, Malisse and the twins are ok, but paying $40 just for two matches on a 2nd round day...

I guess i'm picky, now that I've been to so many events in California. I guess it's good in that it is the only exclusive men's event here, but....So, for now on, I'm sticking to just the Pacific Life Open for seeing the men in California.

Every tourney I have been to, the night tickets cost more than the day tickets. Also, the other small tourneys I have been to have all been played on one main stadium and one side grandstand. There are more practice courts at LA, up at the Sunset Courts - but it's a hike.

I paid a lot for my week ticket and I won't do that again, but I've had a good time. The only reason i'm somewhat disappointed is b/c most of the stuff that I'm enjoying isn't even in the stadium so I feel like I way overspent, but I learned my lesson for next year. It's a nice tournament for sure. The players are more accessible than some of the other ones I've been to, and there are a lot more kids b/c it's summertime. So I dunno, I think it's a very nice event.

What other stuff is there? Outside of the stadium?
I'll be there Fri Sat and Sun.

There's a grandstand court and a show practice court.. is that what you mean? though, there probably won't be much on either of those courts on Sat. and Sun. but tomorrow there should be...

No, Jeff I haven't been to either of those, but I have been to a few other ATP tourneys on the same level as this one, and I must say that LA is equal to those and in some ways even better - the players are more accessible at LA than any tourney I've been to. My complaints about it are things that aren't really anyone's fault like so many players pulling out, a crappy draw and weird upsets and stuff, and the fact that I was stupid and spent too much money on a whole series package

I concur Jeff, there have been way too many withdrawals. I am kinda disappointed.

Jeff, whatever you do, don't ever go to San Jose. I have been to all three ATP events in California, at least 3 times each. I like all of them for different reasons and I have a few things that I dislike about all of them. San Jose is a 'pure tennis' tennis tournament because it is held in an arena with one court. The only thing that you can do there is sit and watch tennis, all day long. The practice courts are in another facility and the players walk around in the tunnel under the arena. If you're lucky, someone interesting will do an autograph session at 6 pm each night.

Indian Wells is a lot of fun because there is so much going on and there are lots of match and practice courts, but its wicked hot during the day and sometimes face freezing cold and windy at night. Sometimes, there is too much going on and you can want to be in 3 places at once. The hotel rooms in the desert are the most expensive of any tournament I've been to. Good sunscreen, a hat, and 2 bottles of water, and this is the tournament that I would recommend to anyone who does not have to go there on a budget.

LA is kind of in between the two. I have had a good time when I have been there, but the facility is kind of small, so when it gets crowded you really feel it. The weather is usually okay, but there was one hot day last year and I nearly fainted during a doubles match. I have seen a lot of good matches in LA, but I've never paid for a ticket so I have no idea what the 'value' of those matches were (I usually volunteer). It just depends on what kind of tennis fan you are and what you want from a tournament when you go there. If you want a good 'fan' experience, go to Houston. I have never seen players more accessible at any tournament than they are at Houston, lots of space on the grounds, accessible practice courts, etc.

Well I think it's just great to go... you got free tickets, so

I'm going to DC next week, my first ATP tournament (been to a few futures). I hope it lives up to my expectations. All I really want is to see Karol Beck and Paul Goldstein after that, it's all icing. I'm only going to buy tickets at the gate on a day-to-day basis, so I don't end up paying for something that I'm not interested in.

Hey Fee! I go to Indian Wells every year, as well. One word for you...priceline.com I love priceline.com. Whenever I plan to stay a few days for a tennis event, I get my hotel tickets at priceline.com. This year I didn't get any for Indian Wells, because I waited until the last few days to try and they were sold out But last year I got a four star hotel in Palm Springs for $65/day and the rate was $279 or somethin.

And yeah, I am a big tennis fan like you, so when I go to tournaments I really like to feel like I'm in the action and can see a lot of my favorites...which doesn't just include Agassi or the top players. I'm 23, and still I enjoy trying to meet the players and get their autographs and stuff. I have quite a few favorites that aren't all top players, and Karol Beck happens to be one of them Unfortunately, he lost before I got there on Wednesday. I just feel like Mercedes-Benz Cup is, yeah, too small like you said. And also, they don't show enough matches in one day. For example, on Wednesday they had a total of three singles matches (For a 2nd round day!!!). Two of them were being played at the same time, so I only got to see two singles matches, while at other tournaments like Indian Wells or even the Acura Classic or JPMorgan Chase, I can see several singles matches. But yeah, my ticket was free, just still I'm disappointed in it. If you live close, it's good, but if you live 2 hours away it's not for me.

Karolbeckfan, your first pro tourney...very cool. Well, I hope you have a great time. I remember my first pro event. Total amazement once you see players that you've only had the pleasure to see on t.v. You'll see what I mean. Oh...and once you go, it's quite addicting. I'm pretty sure you'll have many more to come after DC Hope you enjoy it.
