Mitchell d. Reid in Toyota Challenger R1 could be important to this discussion.

My view - Duckworth and Kyrgios are certainties, assuming they don't enter the playoffs. I think Kokkinakis will get one as well, though I'd prefer him to get a QWC and have the main draw spots given to higher ranked players.

I'd say Groth is now the favourite for the last MDWC position given his form in the USA - he's moved ahead of Kyrgios in the rankings. Mitchell and Reid have age on their side but are much lower ranked, and neither has had a good enough season to justify the MDWC.

I'll also open a discussion about the qualifying wild cards. Last year, Tennis Australia gave out 7 QWCs. Assuming a qualifying cutoff of 250 and Kokkinakis in the main draw, my picks would be (assuming none of these players win the playoff):

Mitchell (will probably just miss out on direct entry into qualies)
Thompson (just outside the top 300, in fantastic form in the Aussie tournaments)
Bolt (hasn't had a great year, but held in high regard by TA)
Whittington (won a Futures tournament, made the final of another)
Saville (I was unsure about him but he's picked up towards the end of the year and his junior results will still carry some weight)
Mott (impressive in the Aussie tournaments, I think he's going to have a big year in 2014)
Feeney (given his age I'm least sure about Feeney, but I don't know if there's anyone else banging down the door and he was given a QWC last year)

What do you guys think? 2012 and 2013 had some interesting selections but I think this year it's more clear-cut, thanks to a solid older group (Reid, Smith, Jones) getting direct entry and a lot of young players climbing up the rankings.

I doubt it personally. Kubler hasn't played on hard court since 2011 and even in that year he only played one tournament.

Kubler has mega talent, that is undeniable. Some very credible MTF posters say he's the most talented player born in 1993. However, his knees are vulnerable and so I don't think he'll play on hard until he's transitioning to the main tour (after he's played more clay Challengers).

Interesting to note that at the 2013 Asia Pacific WC Play-off for the Australian Open Wild card, the matches were a best of three format, not a best of five sets, as was the case for the Australina AO WC playoff last year.
Why do they only have to play best of three (as is the case in AO qualifying) whilst our men play the longer (stupid) five set format?
Will common sense prevail and they only play best of 3 sets this year in Melbourne?

Yeah I'd like to see Kubler get a QWC ahead of Feeney (and most of the others tbh) but he hasn't played much locally and as StatRacket said, knees are an issue.

5 set tennis is much better for preparation into AO. It makes the players fitter and at least gives them experience of the ebs and flows of 5 set tennis. I think it is fantastic.

I doubt Feeney would get one. Thompson, Whittington, Saville, Reid, Smith, Jones, Barton are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Forget about Kubler on hard courts. He will never play on hard courts again, unless he gets into the top 50. Highly unlikely.

Matthew Barton seems to be widely forgotten by most of us.......mentioned by Southend Aussies. I saw him play in Sydney qulaifying and I was hugley impressed. What a shame his year has been sidelined by injuries.

Reid, Smith and Jones will get in directly based on their ranking which is why I didn't include them. I'll admit I forgot about Barton, but he's ranked 253, which makes him borderline for direct entry. If he doesn't get in directly I agree he'll take Feeney's spot.

He had a great start to the year but burned out midway through the season. Kept playing through it then got injured as a result... Needs to think about his scheduling next year... Faces a huge rankings drop if he doesn't replicate his early season form from this year in Jan/Feb 2014...

Yeah I remember last years qualies cut-off was really low so I'm pretty confident he'll make direct entry.
