i don't wanna sound like the guy who knows it all and always have a different opinion, but youth obesity is an epidemic (mostly in the States though) because of actual food i think.

95% of the people i know who went to the States for 1 to 6 months and more have gained several kgs overweight and most of them say they didn't eat that much, it just stuck.

There is a huge difference between even McD from Europe and the States, they are really pounding those burgers with unimaginable stuff up there, here not so much, actually far from it.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...er-recipe.html

One can imagine all the crap there is in every possible other chain of food producers and fast food restaurants.

I believe in Europe we're a bit different about food and it's perhaps the only side of traditions being smth good that i would admit.

But it's true kids need more movement, not to do as much as before, because i think on average they actually do, but more than before because the quality of food has deteriorated so much, it's a disaster.

Of course video games don't help and they are indeed part of the problem somehow, yet not the main part i think.

Any sane person would obviously rather go up a level on candy crush than fornicate with a member of the opposite sex.

spot on. A friend of mine is McDonald's assiduous eater here in europe and he's in perfectly shape. as soon as he went to USA, eating the same things at McDonald's he put 10kgs, once he was back in europe he lost them in pretty much 2 months always eating at McDoland.

Students now huddle around electronic devices during recess, imitating shrubs in an English garden. I used to run like the wind blows during recess when I was a kid. It seems that video games these days are even more addictive than watching "Happy Days" reruns on the TV. I can see the value of sending kids off to live with the Amish for a summer, or to camp, where simple electricity is as modern as it gets.

I'm not sure if this is just a typical male thing or if this is an example of what the topic is discussing, but I find my mind zoning out while talking to the lady friend, thinking about a certain online game at home. I've always thought I'm just being considerate since my online character has a far bossier girlfriend..

I respect your honesty, and admitting there's a problem is the first step to recovery!

It's difficult today to be alone with someone, as everyone is carrying 75 people in his/her pocket or purse .

'Technology' has not increased communication - it has merely increased superficial, meaningless communication. It encourages it, in fact - text messages, facebook, twitter, even E mail is all used to just bounce of the surface of everyone/everything. It effectively discourages profound relations.
Profound, meaningful communication is today considered 'too much effort'. Hell, even E mail is becoming obsolete, because texting and facebook and twitter, etc. are more 'convenient'. But there is no meaningful or profound communication performed via the latter means.

People don't relate with each other anymore. It has become, at best, 'my machine communicating with your machine'...

Not to mention that technology also provides infinite superficial distractions, which distract us from truly important things.
And cellphones are far more symbols of status than they are true tools of communication.

As Henry Thoreau observed...
"Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. They are but improved means to an unimproved end... We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate."

Don't blame the video games or the smartphones, blame the people who make them. It's an enormous industry, and the dudes in charge will manufacture anything they want, knowing they can advertise it so well they can make anyone buy it for little practical reason. Guys at the top are doing it to make lots of money, but end of the day people have a choice whether or not to buy smartphones, video games e.t.c.

If human society's going down the crapper, humans only have themselves to blame.
