Rhyne's first entry is out: http://www.abnamroclearing.com/en/ab...ms/week37.html

Quote:
Hello everybody!
My name is Rhyne Williams and Iím a professional tennis player from Knoxville, Tennessee. Iím 22 years old and aiming to break the ATP Top 100 by the end of the year. From now on, I will be writing a weekly blog for ABN AMRO about my life on the pro tour! I hope you will enjoy reading these entries, as Iím looking forward to keeping you updated about my experiences!

Let me first introduce myself a little bit more. I come from a big tennis family. My mom, Michelle, played college tennis at the University of Tennessee and my father Bob played at Duke. My younger sister Caitlin (19) is following in my motherís footsteps as she currently plays for the University of Tennessee, whereas my older sister Jennifer (28) played at Birmingham College.

I am coached by my cousin Christopher and my uncle Mike was a former ATP Top 30 singles and Top 10 doubles player in the world!

I started playing tennis when I was 8 years old and my mom was my coach until I was about 13. Thatís when I wanted my mom to just be mom :-). We used to practice about three times a week, but I also loved playing basketball and baseball and when I was 13 I had to decide which sport I wanted to pursue. That was a tough decision because I was competitive in basketball and baseball as well.

In the end, I preferred to play an individual sport, as you control your own destiny and I liked that. I went to train with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) down at Key Biscayne in Florida. I practiced there for about 15 Ė 20 weeks per year and I usually flew down to Florida for about 1 -2 week stretches at a time

I actually played two years of college tennis myself at the University of Tennessee, before I decided to turn pro after my sophomore year when I was 20 years old. In my next blog, I will go into that some more.

Right now Iím practicing for a few weeks, getting ready for some challenger tournaments. These are events which are one level below the ATP Tour, but they still offer a great opportunity for me to earn points to hopefully break the into the ATP Top 100 by the end of this season. Iím currently ranked 115.

I played in the US Open as well, where I lost a tough first round match against former world number three Nikolay Davydenko. Iíll tell you more about that next time!

Bye for now!

2nd Blog Entry: http://www.abnamroclearing.com/en/ab...ms/week38.html

Quote:
Hello everybody!
When I introduced myself to you all last week in my first blog, I wrote a little bit about the two years I spent in college. I would like to go a bit further into that, because those years were very important to me in my growth as a tennis player.

As you may know, John Isner played four full years of college tennis before turning pro. For me it was an awesome experience to play for two years at the University of Tennessee, but by then I knew it was time to chase my dream of becoming a fulltime tennis player. I did all that I could in college. I almost won the individual championship and as a team we were also close to claiming the title.

The decision to leave college as a 20-year-old was all mine and it was not a hard choice to make. I have no regrets now, although there are things I miss from college. I had a lot of great friends. I miss watching the football games and doing the crazy stuff that college kids do.

I also promised to reflect some more on my loss to Nikolay Davydenko in the first round of the US Open. That match was a heartbreaker for me. I was up 2-1 in sets and 3-0 in the fourth set and somehow it slipped away from me. I sort of got ahead of myself, started thinking about the win, and did not play ďin the momentĒ. It was only my fourth Grand Slam match and I was very nervous towards the end. I can definitely learn a lot from it and itís a match that gives me confidence, because I was giving a former world number three a very hard time.

Thatís all for now. Iíll write again next week, when Iím starting a three week period of playing challenger tournaments in California.

Thanks for reading!

Default Tennis is a crazy sport

Apparently, Rhyne answered my question regarding his shoulder injury in this excerpt.

Quote:
Tennis is a crazy sport

I have arrived in Tiburon, where Iíll be playing my third tournament in a row in California. Unfortunately I didnít get past the first round last week in Sacramento, where I lost to Daniel Evans. Losing in the first round is always tough, but playing Evans was a very difficult draw for me.

He was on a hot streak, having reached the third round of the US Open a few weeks ago. I didnít play my best, but Iím trying to look at the positives.

Tennis is a crazy sport, because you basically lose every week. Every tournament only has one winner. Thatís something you have to deal with. Youíve got to work on having a short memory. The good thing in our sport is that thereís always another week. I actually feel like Iím hitting the ball well. I just need to improve my serve, which hasnít been the weapon it usually is for me.

Iíve been having a bit of a shoulder issue for about four or five months now, which occasionally means I have to take it easy with my serve in practice. Iíve had an MRI done, which showed no serious issue. I just take a lot of Advil :-). Hopefully by Monday, when the tournament gets underway, Iíll be serving bombs!

These tournaments in California are all incredibly nice and played in great locations. This week Iím staying in a house with a lady that my mom grew up playing tennis with in Florida. We stayed here last year as well. The house has a swimming pool and a basketball court in the back, so Iím definitely getting spoiled!

I actually stay in housing families a lot when Iím playing tournaments in the US. This is a service that many tournaments in this country offer to the players and I always enjoy staying with a family and getting to know about them. Most of the time I do this together with my coach.
I have good memories from the tournament in Tiburon from last year, when I reached the quarterfinals. I ended up losing to the eventual champion, when Jack Sock beat me in three sets. Iím looking forward to another great week!

My Tennis pets

Quote:
Unfortunately I lost my match in the second round in Tiburon this week in a deciding third set tiebreak. That was really disappointing, but itís time to move on. As I wrote last week, in tennis you need to have a short term memory. I will now start practicing to get ready for the indoor season, which Iím excited about!

I figured Iíd tell you something more personal about myself this week and that is the fact that I love animals! When I was staying in a housing family in Napa recently, the owners had a beautiful golden retriever dog, as you can see in the photo.

Growing up, we always had pets at home and we gave them tennis related names! We once had our own golden retriever, Rafter. In case you donít know, Pat Rafter is a former US Open champion from Australia. Right now we have a small dog, namedÖ Rally. Yep, that name comes from Ďtennis rallyí.

Weíve also had a couple of cats. One of them was named Prince. I grew up playing with Prince rackets, as did both of my parents. The funny thing is we then had a cat named Wilson, and not long thereafter I switched racket brands toÖ Wilson! Our current cat is named Ace. I really like it when my housing families have pets as well, so I can play with them.

Iíve got three more tournaments scheduled for this year, where Iíll hopefully be able to make a last strong push towards the top100. Iíve got two weeks to get ready for that final stretch. I will then play a tournament in Charlottesville.

Thanks again for reading and until next week!

Different surfaces

So this week I have begun my preparations for the indoor season thatís coming up. Iíve got another week to go to get ready for my final three tournaments of the year.

As Iíve written before, I really like playing on clay. However, I must say, I always love playing indoors as well! For those of you that know about tennis, that might sound a bit weird. If youíre not that familiar with the different surfaces we play on in our sport, Iíll explain some more.

Clay is known as the slowest surface in tennis because it produces a higher bounce and the speed of the ball slows down as it hits the ground. On indoor courts, the ball stays low after the bounce and kind of skids more through the court. That means that, generally speaking, itís easier to play aggressive tennis on an indoor court. You can finish points more quickly.

Now, to get back to my own preferencesÖ I have previously stated that I like to work the points and kind of dig myself into the rallies. So why do I love playing indoors exactlyÖ? Well, if I can get a good feel for the ball and get myself into a nice rhythm, I can get hot on an indoor court. I hit my backhand really flat, which means it can really take off on this surface. You could say that my backhand suits faster surfaces better, whereas my forehand is more effective on a clay court. Iím hoping not a lot of my opponents will read this blogÖ ;-).

Seeing as Iíll still just be practicing next week, Iíll share a funny story about a practice I had with the great Roger Federer in my next entry!

Have a great week!

Rhyne
http://www.abnamroclearing.com/en/ab...s/Week-42.html

Quote:
Practicing with Federer

As promised last week, I told you all I would share a little story about the time I had the honour of practicing with the great Roger Federer.

I was 17 years old and it occurred at the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati. Octagon managed to arrange a wildcard for me for the qualifying tournament. When I lost I decided to stick around during the tournament, to practice with whoever needed a hitting partner. And then I remember my coach received a callÖ asking if I would be interested in hitting with Roger. Of course I definitely made time for that!

I still have to laugh about the whole experience. I was so nervous, that when he hit the first ball towards me I immediately dumped my backhand in the bottom of the net. That was a funny moment for both of us, but in the end we had a great practice of about an hour and a half. We even played a practice set, which I lost 6-3. So that was not too bad!

The whole setting was crazy. There were about one to two thousand people watching and we had security helping us get to the court. Roger still is very nice to me. Every time I see him now he says hello and heís just a really nice guy.

By the way, I was practicing in Boca last week and a Dutch journalist flew over to make a video about me for ABN AMRO! In the photo you can see him at work during one of my practices.

Iíll be back on the tournament circuit next week, playing an indoor event in Charlottesville. Iím ranked 125th in the world right now, but Iíve got three events left this year to edge closer to my goal of reaching the top-100!

Iíll write again next week when Iíve hopefully got some wins under my belt. Bye for now!
