Altamirano, Bellis headline US Open junior wild cards

Quote:
USTA Boys’ 18s national champion Collin Altamirano headlines a group of talented youngsters receiving singles main draw wild cards into the 2013 US Open Junior Championships, set to begin on Sunday, Sept. 1.

As this year’s USTA Boys’ 18s national champion, Altamirano earned a wild card to play in the US Open men’s main draw, which begins next week. The 17-year-old became the first unseeded player to win the Boys’ 18s singles title in the 71 years the event has been at its current home in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Among those joining Altamirano as wild card entrants into the boys’ junior singles draw are:

Danny Kerznerman, 17, who trains at the USTA Training Center – East, home of the US Open.
Mackenzie McDonald, 18, who played in qualifying for the US Open men’s draw this week. Last week at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, he became the first unranked teen to qualify for an ATP Masters 1000 event.
Gage Brymer, 18, the No. 1-ranked boys’ 18s singles player in the USTA national standings.
Jared Donaldson, 16, the 2013 USTA Boys’ 18s National Championship runner-up who won his opening match in the 2013 US Open Qualifying Tournament.
Tommy Paul, 16, the 2013 USTA Boys’ 16s national champion and national clay court champion.

One additional boys’ singles main draw wild card will be awarded to a player to be determined.

On the girls’ side, 14-year-olds CiCi Bellis and Michaela Gordon received singles main draw wild cards. Together, the two led the U.S. to the World Junior Tennis title earlier this month in the premier 14-and-under world team competition, held in the Czech Republic. Bellis, additionally, has won several prestigious singles titles in 2013, including the girls’ 16s Easter Bowl championship.

Among those joining Bellis and Gordon as wild card entrants into the girls’ junior singles draw are:

Brooke Austin, 17, a USTA Girls’ 18s National Championship semifinalist who played in qualifying for this year’s US Open women’s draw.
Peggy Porter, 17, ranked No. 5 in the USTA Girls’ 18s national standings. Katerina Stewart, 16, the 2013 USTA Girls’ 16s national champion.
Alicia Black, 15, a 2013 Easter Bowl girls’ 18s finalist.
Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, 15, the 2013 USTA Girls’ 18s national clay court champion.
Kaitlyn McCarthy, 15, ranked No. 3 in the USTA Girls’ 18s national standings.

The draws for the 2013 US Open Junior Championships will be revealed by Saturday, Aug. 31; to check back for the draws and additional information, click here.

Bencic and Zverev favourites for US Open

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev headlines the boys’ event. The top-seeded German reached this year’s Roland Garros final as well as claiming his first Grade A title at the Italian Open, but will need to improve his form after a slow lead up to the US Open, suffering a third round defeat at the Canadian Open Junior Championships, if he is to be in with a chance of claiming the world No. 1 ranking.

Second seed Gianluigi Quinzi won the junior title at Wimbledon just a couple of months ago and will be keen to get his hands on another Grand Slam. Quinzi has spent much of the year playing on the ITF Futures circuit where he has achieved a current ATP ranking of No. 390, the highest among the juniors at Flushing Meadows, and will hope these experiences stand him in good stead during the week.

Chile’s Christian Garin is another of the current Grand Slam title holders and will be a strong contender for the title at Flushing Meadows. The Roland Garros champion has been in fine form on his preferred surface of clay, but will now look to assert himself on the hard courts in an effort to secure a second Grand Slam title and move up the rankings into the top five.

Tournament Preview
Bencic, Zverev Lead US Open Junior Fields
by Colette Lewis, 30 August 2013

In contrast to the girls' stellar field, the boys' draw is missing four of the current ITF Top 10 including No. 1 Nick Kyrgios of Australia. With Australian boys champion Kyrgios absent, there are just two reigning junior slam champions in the field, Italy's Gianluigi Quinzi, the Wimbledon boys winner, and Chile's Christian Garin, the Roland Garros boys champion. Both 17, Quinzi and Garin have also had success on the lower levels of the professional circuit, and are the only two competitors with ATP rankings inside the Top 400.

The top seed is neither of those two players however, with 16-year-old Alexander Zverev of Germany receiving that honor. Zverev, who is making his US Open debut, won the Grade A Italian Open and reached the final at Roland Garros in a spring surge that saw him go from outside the Top 100 to the Top 5 of the ITF junior rankings in the space of three months.

No. 3 seed Nikola Milojevic of Serbia has yet to reach a junior slam final, but his consistency has been impressive this year, reaching at least the quarterfinals of the three previous junior slams. Croatia's Borna Coric, long considered a top junior slam prospect, is coming off back-to-back Futures titles earlier this month, so he will be full of confidence.

The Korean contingent is a strong one, and although only Wimbledon finalist Hyeon Chung will be seeded, Seong Chan Hong, Duck Hee Lee and Young Seok Kim are dangerous floaters.

European champion Karen Khachanov has yet to reach the quarterfinals of a junior slam, but his win over Kyrgios at Roland Garros marks him as a player to watch next week.

Japan produced two of last year's semifinalists at the US Open juniors, and one of them, Yoshihito Nishioka, returns, this time as a seed. Nishioka captured the Grade 1 International Hard Court title two weeks ago, and with countrymen Ken Onishi, Naoki Nakagawa and Takashi Saito, Japan again could make a strong showing in New York.

Fifteen-year-old Stefan Kozlov will be the only American boy seeded in New York, but the US presence is much stronger than that number suggests. In addition to Kozlov, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this year, the US has four other boys who received entry based on their ITF ranking: Noah Rubin, Luca Corinteli, Martin Redlicki and Spencer Papa. The wild cards are also a strong group, with Kalamazoo champion Collin Altamirano hoping to emulate Jack Sock's path in 2010, when Sock used the junior wild card won at Kalamazoo to take the US Open boys title. Kalamazoo finalist Jared Donaldson, 16, reached the final round of men's qualifying at the US Open two weeks ago, defeating two ATP Top 250 players, so he will also be a threat.

Mackenzie McDonald became the first unranked teenager to qualify for an ATP Masters event when he defeated Nicolas Mahut of France and Steve Johnson to earn a main draw spot in Cincinnati, and he is looking forward to ending his junior slam career on a high note before beginning classes at UCLA. Easter Bowl champion Gage Brymer, Clay Court champion Daniel Kerznerman and 16s Kalamazoo champion Tommy Paul also received wild cards, as did accomplished Southern Californians JC Aragone and Ernesto Escobedo.

The last time the US didn't have a singles finalist in the US Open junior championships was 2007. There's no guarantee of one this year of course, yet the excitement of watching the best juniors in the country perform well on their home turf adds spice to the frequently unpredictable nature of a junior slam.
