I think what is most impressive is that all 3 streaks were ended by the other.

Hamburg 2007
Dubai 2006
Wimbledon 2008

There are many more players with experience on clay courts than on grass, therefore, more good players on clay to beat. All three streaks are equally impressive, IMO.

Just playing devil's advocate
CYGS is more important because of the different surfaces. Let's say USO would have rotated between all surfaces during those 4 years, then the achievements would be at the same level.

Well maybe, a detailed look at the draws of each streak would be needed.

The main reason why I give the edge to Federer is because it is easier to control the outcome of the match on clay once you find your own successful formula, and the longer season lets you carry on with the momentum. On grass you can't build momentum and it can be a bit of a lottery sometimes.

Great post. It's very hard to compare each. All are unique in their own way.

Hard to say. I think Roger's streak on grass was amazing because as was said before it comes after the heaviest part of the season and as we know, grass is a surface where one can catch fire and you can be beaten so easily on an off day. And remember, Roger faced match points vs Rochus in Halle 2006.

Like you said: it's short. Being right after the "busiest patch of the year", isn't, relatively, that much of a burden (since it's so short).

When Rod Laver won his CYGS, he only won on 2 different surfaces (3 grass, 1 clay), and it's considered the most heralded achievement in tennis.

It's funny how these things change, though. The present really does affect the past as much as vice versa. In the 1980s the most-heralded achievement as far as I remember was actually Borg's 5 Wimbledons in a row. In the 1990s it became Sampras's slam count. Now it's Laver's CYGS again. It's basically whichever record looks most untouchable. When Sampras won his 6th Wimbledon, Borg's record no longer seemed such a big deal, even though Sampras's titles weren't consecutive. When Federer got within touching distance of Sampras's slams, we "realised" 14 slams weren't as hard as we thought. If somebody does win a CYGS soon, Laver's record won't be quite so special either.

On topic, well, in view of the foregoing, it's too early to say. Whichever streak is furthest ahead of subsequent streaks will look the most impressive.

lol, Nadal's clay streak without question. Are we simply ignoring a difference of 16 matches like it's no big deal?

This is the amount of ranking points taken during the series, using today's point scale:
Nadal 81: 12850 points
Federer 65: 12450
Federer 56: 9050

That's like saying you're fresh to play a basketball match after having spent the whole day playing soccer.

It's clearly not at the level of winning a CYGS in the present day. Anyway having the highest Slam count is a bigger achievement imo, since Federer set the bar so high.

During his grass streak, he only made the RG final 3 times. And in those 3 times, he twice won Halle & Wimbledon: 2006 & 2007. In 2006, he played 31 matches leading up to the grass season and in 2007, he played 34 matches leading up to the grass season

Nadal played even MORE matches in the year he won Queens Club and Wimbledon (2008: 35 matches, and won the French). So it's not like it's impossible to play a basketball game after having spent the whole day playing soccer. Federer isn't even the only person to have done it. So like I said, the grass season being so short is a benefit, not a detriment.

Regardless, Laver's CYGS is considered more impressive than Nadal & Borg's 4 RGs in a row and Fed's 5 Wimbledons in a row (and Sampras's 4 Wimbledons in a row)...even though there was very little surface variety. This demonstrates that incredibly high form in a short period of time seemingly appears to be more impressive than chunks of incredibly high form over several years.

Hard to tell honestly, each one has right to be best

HC streak - biggest surface, basically anyone can play well on it, so we can say you have biggest competiton on HC
grass streak-such short part of the year, it was few years - longest in time
clay streak-longest in term of matches

really hard to tell can´t choose
