Three times winner in Roland Garros confirms he will be in Wimbledon
Gustavo Kuerten will have a busy first semester in the tour. He just announced this Thursday where he will be playing in the first six months of 2003. The crowd can be happy, as they will see Guga play all the Masters Series and Grand Slams.
The new season starts in Oceania, on hard courts, in January 6, with the ATP Tour in Auckland, where Guga plays for the first time. The following week he plays the Australian Open, also on hard courts, and then travels to Hesinborg, Sweden, to help Brazil in the first round of Davis Cup, on indoor carpet.
Following, Guga comes back to Santa Catarina, and is already certain to play the hard court Masters Indian Wells and Miami (participation in Buenos Aires and Acapulco to be announced soon).
After playing in the United States, depending on Brazil´s result in Davis Cup, Guga plays for his country once again, and then starts his fave part of the year, the clay season, to open in Monte Carlo TMS.
From Monaco, where he was the champion twice, Guga goes to Barcelona and then the Masters in Roma and Hamburg, where he is also a former champion, and finishes the dirt in Roland Garros, where he won three times.
After the Paris Slam, the next one is in Wimbeldon, on grass, where he wasn´t playing the last two years.
"My calendar is almost the same from the last couple of seasons, if you leave last year out as it was different for obvious reasons. I will play the bigger tournaments, Grand Slams and Masters Series, and some smaller ones, as I always do, to help getting ready for the big events. Also, I´m going to play Wimbledon. I miss playing there. I couldn´t go the last two years, and it´s a Grand Slam and we miss not playing those. I´m not a specialist playing on grass, but maybe I can play some good tennis there", said Guga, who is in Camboriu for his pre-season in coach Larri Passos´ academy.
"We will keep the formula of the last years. The only new tournament is Auckland, really. As we are having more time in the pre-season, we can start earlier this time," explained Larri.
Guga and Larri get on the plane for New Zealand on January 1st.
