Yes this was a very important win. He also improves his lead in grass titles to 13. I'm perfectly fine with him not winning as much as before; each of these achievements is a great bonus.

He's also at a massive 121 grass match wins. And 22 ATP-250 wins, only behind Muster's 26 (sure, not an important record to chase).

I hope Federer can tie the record of reaching a slam final for 11 consecutive seasons at Wimbledon or the US Open. By the way, Federer has 12 consecutive years with a Masters 1000 final now, probably a record. Sampras has 11, Nadal 9, Agassi only 5.

22? I have him on 21, tied second with Roddick. He broke the tie with Sampras, among others, who's on 20. Of course, had the category existed in the 70s and 80s, Connors would have a resounding record here, of his 109 titles only 28 (compared to Federer's 44) were in "masters and higher" leaving 81 for what is now ATP500s and ATP250s.

Thanks for fixing that Litotes, 21 it is. Same number as M1000. And it's true that it's only from 1990 onwards.

By winning the Halle final, Federer avoided losing 4 consecutive finals, having already lost the finals in Basel, WTF, Rome. He is still without a 4+ loss streak in finals in his career. He has 3 other streaks of 3 lost finals (2006 and 2008 on clay vs. Nadal, and in 2010 Madrid-Halle-Canada).

Interestingly, the other current top players have a similar record. Nadal has 3 streaks of 3 finals losses, and one of 4 losses. Djokovic has 3 streaks of 3 losses, Murray has 1.

Interesting thread, Litotes. Really a special time to be watching. Glad to see he won in Halle, would be nice to see how he does in Wimbly now that Nadal is out.

The OP was last updated 14/11-2011. A bit outdated now. We've had some updates along the way, iirc.

Australian Open records

Note that due to the existence of the Challenge Round in early years of the slams and its subsequent discontinuation, pre Open Era comparisons are only made for wins and finals

Most championships won

Federer has equalled Andre Agassi’s Open Era record of 4 Australian Open wins. This feat has been matched by 2 players, including Ken Rosewall who had victories either side of the introduction of the Open era. The all-time record belongs to Roy Emerson
Code:
All-time rank	Player Australian Opens won
1 Emerson 6
=2 Federer 4
=2 Agassi 4
=2 Djokovic	4
=2 Rosewall	4
=2 Crawford	4
Most final appearances

Federer is tied with Stefan Edberg’s record 5 Australian Open finals in the open era. Ken Rosewall achieved the same feat but 3 of his titles came before the Open era. In those earlier days, 3 separate players made final appearances a record 7 times.
Code:
All-time rank	Player Australian Opens finals
=1 Emerson 7
=1 Bromwich	7

Most semi final appearances

Federer is alone here with 10 for record in the Open Era.

=3 Drobny 5

=3 Lacoste 5

Most semi final appearances

Federer is at the time of writing one behind Nadal's Open Era record 8.

1 Nadal 8
2 Federer 7
 =3 Borg 6
=3 Wilander	6
Most quarter final appearances

After FO 2013, Federer has taken this record
Code:

1 Federer 10
=2 Agassi 9

=1 Federer 8
=4 Sampras 7

Connor’s record of 11 semi finals is going to be very difficult for Federer to match. He is currently 3 behind.
Code:
Open era rank	Player Wimbledon semi finals
1 Connors 11
2 Becker 9
=3 Sampras 8
=3 McEnroe 8
=3 Federer 8

US Open records

Most championships won

Federer needs 2 more US Open victories to tie 3 players from before the Open Era. He currently shares the Open Era record with Connors and Sampras
Code:

=1 Tilden 7
=1 Larned 7
=1 Sears 7
=4 Federer 5
=4 Sampras 5
=4 Connors 5
Most final appearances

Tilden’s all-time record of 10 is also going to be extremely difficult to match as he needs 4 more. The Open Era record shared by Lendl and Sampras are 2 more than Federer at the moment.
Code:
All-time rank	Player US Open finals
1 Tilden 10
2 Larned 9
=3 Sampras 8
=3 Lendl 8
=5 Connors 7
=5 Sears 7
=7 Federer 6
=7 Agassi 6

Rankings records

Note that rankings statistics compare players since 1973, when the ATP first used the computerised ranking method.

Most weeks at number 1

Federer has totalled 302 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings, well ahead of Pete Sampras’ old record
Code:
Rank	Player Total weeks at number 1
1	Federer 302
2	Sampras 286

Most weeks ranked in top 2

Federer is now 9 weeks ahead of Lendl
Code:
Rank	Player Total weeks at number 1 or 2
1	Federer 418
2	Lendl 409
3	Sampras 376

Most years ended at number 1

Alongside Connors, Federer is also 1 shy of Sampras
Code:
Rank	Player Year end number 1s
1	Sampras 6
=2	Federer 5
=2	Connors 5
Most years ended in top 2

Federer has the consecutive record with 8 years, and the total record with 9
Code:
Rank	Player Year end number 1 or 2
1	Federer 9
2	Connors 8
