He beated Berdych and lost to Raonic in a 3rd set TB, so overall a great week for Tommy! Hope he continues like this in Estoril.

He's chasing a seeding for Roland Garros, and without any points to drop until after that, I think he has a real chance. He's 38th this week, so every win counts. I hope he can make it.

Tommy Robredo celebrated his 31st birthday at the Portugal Open on Wednesday.

The former World No. 5 received a chocolate cake, which he handed out to Portuguese fans, during an autograph session. A band also played ‘Happy Birthday’ and the crowd sang along.

“It felt great,” said Robredo, who took a slice of cake back to his coach Salvador Navarro.

“It is always tough to be away from family on a birthday, but to receive a cake and receive the reception I did from the crowd is great. Last year, I was at home celebrating with 30 friends in a restaurant. If I keep winning, that will be the best present.”

French Open Round 4

Tommy Robredo came back from two sets down for the third match in a row.

ROLAND GARROS 2013

IRONMAN ROBREDO EDGES ALMAGRO TO REACH QFS

Paris, France

by ATP Staff | 02.06.2013

What does it take to beat Tommy Robredo? The 31-year-old Spaniard became the first man since 1927 to come back from two sets down for the third successive match in a Grand Slam on Sunday as he defeated 11th-seeded countryman Nicolas Almagro 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Roland Garros quarter-finals.

"I played a player who is incredible on clay," said Robredo. "I'm not thinking about history. History is this match I played today. It's not the score that counts. Nothing more than that.

"He was 4-1 up [in the third set]. Maybe he had a little bit of doubt, though, in that moment. Then I just pushed hard and I won the third. And then I was just dreaming and dreaming to try to do it again, and I did it."

In his second-round match, Robredo had fought back to beat Igor Sijsling and in a dramatic third-round encounter, he saved four match points to edge France’s Gael Monfils. The last player to achieve the same feat was Henri Cochet at Wimbledon in 1927.

"I think that being in the quarter-finals again, it's amazing, and also with three comebacks the way I did," said Robredo. "I just need to enjoy it because I think that in tennis, we need to enjoy it when we do great things and keep focused. Because if it's possible, why not? [I could be] one time in the semi-finals here."

This time last year, Robredo had fallen from a career-high of World No. 5 to No. 470 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. On the comeback from a career-threatening injury, that had sidelined him for 14 months, the Spaniard was competing at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Italy.

Robredo has since clawed his way back up to World No. 34, helped by winning his 11th ATP World Tour title at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca (d. Anderson) in April.

As he attempts to continue his fairytale run and reach the Roland Garros semi-finals for the first time, he will face fourth seed David Ferrer. Robredo has lost his past three meetings with Ferrer, and trails 2-6 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

The 27-year-old Almagro will rue his missed opportunities. The Murcia native led 4-1 in the third set, 4-2 in the fourth set and 2-0 in the fifth set, but could not close out victory. A finalist in Houston (l. to Isner) and Barcelona (l. to Nadal) this year, he also surrendered a two-set lead at this year’s Australian Open quarter-finals, losing to Ferrer.

A disappointed Almagro suggested it was one of the most difficult results of his career to digest.

"I think Tommy played a very consistent match and for me, I had my ups and downs. These ups and downs cost me the match. I think Tommy produced a remarkable, admirable game. I have every respect for what he did. For my part, I need to move on as best I can."

I do not write for a while on the forums for various reasons. But I continued to follow Tommy, always. I remember that the last year I saw him on Caltanissetta Challenger to win, I could see him live for the first time, was very kind with me! From there began a comeback that led him inexorably to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, with the determination and humility that mark and that only He can have. It 'started by Challenger (Caltanissetta, Milan, Genoa etc ...) and then arrive in the major circuit (he won Casablanca), and now more than 400 from the position he finds himself among the top 25 players in the world. And 'something magical if you think that many took for finished because of his age. But I've always believed in him and continue to do so! It is now also a record, replace 3 games in a row by two sets to nil. That mean? Tommy, have you ever had one of the best players on clay. But you're also a lot more. A man and a life lesson for all of us! <3

Also haven't posted in a while.

I remember too watching a challenger online and when he reached the RG QF I felt the same. I was so happy because I remember worrying he'd either retire or at best become a doubles specialist but look at him now, back in the seedings at slams :cheer: Well done Tommy boy that's why I love you

Robredo won his second title of the season

VEGETA CROATIA OPEN UAMG 2013

RESURGENT ROBREDO ENDS FOGNINI STREAK

Umag, Croatia

by ATP Staff | 28.07.2013

The resurgence of Tommy Robredo took another step forward Sunday as he captured his second title of the year at the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag. The veteran Spaniard finally halted Fabio Fognini’s 13-match winning streak, beating the Italian 6-0, 6-3 in the clay-court final.

"I'm more than happy," said Robredo. "I've been a professional for nearly 15 years and this is my 12th title, so there have not been many times with trophies. I love the emotion.

"Before the match, I was talking to my coach and I was saying, 'It's lovely to be waiting to play a final and you are nervous.' Money can't buy this feeling and I'm lucky to be part of this sport and lucky to have the chance to feel these feelings. I enjoy it and I know how to handle it."

Robredo began the year at World No. 114 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, having tumbled down the order due to injury. After compiling a 28-15 match record in 2013, the 31-year-old Spaniard, a former World No. 5, has returned to the Top 30 and claimed his second title of the year as he dismissed Fognini in 62 minutes.

The fifth-seeded Robredo surged through the opening set, surrendering just one point on serve and six in total as he took a commanding lead. Fognini, who has saved match points galore in his stellar three weeks, including three against Gael Monfils in Saturday’s semi-finals, rallied briefly in the second set, breaking for a 2-1 lead. His advantage was short-lived, though, as Robredo won five of the last six games.

"I played lovely. I played great," said Robredo. "It was a perfect match. It's not easy to play a final and I played very good. I served okay, I returned okay. To win today, I think I did a great job."

It was their first meeting since 2011 and saw Robredo improve to a 4-1 lead over Fognini in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. Robredo earned 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points and €74,000.

Thirteen ATP World Tour titles this season have now been won by players aged 30 and over, already matching last year’s total.

Robredo, who won his first title for two years when he triumphed at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca in April (d. Anderson), improved to a 12-7 finals record. The right-hander has captured nine of his past ten ATP World Tour clay finals, beginning with 2006 Hamburg (d. Stepanek); his only loss came in Warsaw in 2008 (l. to Davydenko).
