Quote:
He said he couldn’t wait to play on European clay for the first time, and he wasn’t kidding. With a score of 6-2, 6-3, American Jack Sock defeated Argentina’s Facundo Arguello in the final qualifying round and earned his way into the 2013 French Open. For American tennis fans, it’s an exciting week that lies ahead. It’s true that US tennis is going through a generational change. For the first time in its history, the highest-ranked male American is outside the top 10, but some things are worth waiting for. And the inevitable arrival of a young rising American like Jack Sock is one of them.

Sock arrived in Paris late last week, saying “I love playing on clay. Especially the red clay over here in Europe.” No, looking for the closest Chipotle wasn’t the first thing he did. But you can bet that after his first practice session, he investigated. “I actually heard they just got one in Paris. I will definitely find out,” said Sock. (Sure enough, the next day there was, indeed, a photo of a “poulet” (chicken) burrito on his Twitter page, along with the tweet “It was a cab ride away but I found you in Paris”). Whatever it takes to win

When I asked Sock how much opportunity he had to play on clay before turning pro, he said he only played on clay “a couple times a year on it growing up, and it was green clay.” Not only had Sock never played on the red clay of Roland Garros before — he had never had the opportunity to play on the European continent until two weeks ago, when he and a few fellow Americans tested the clay at the tournament in Bordeaux, France. That warm-up proved useful, as Sock breezed through the first round of the Paris qualifying tournament, defeating Belgium’s Maxime Authom 6-4, 6-2. With terrible weather conditions, round two was more challenging, but Sock maintained focus and pulled off a victory over Argentina’s Renzo Olivo 7-5, 6-4. For round three, the miserable French weather was still a threat, but Sock closed the match before the rain and hail began. For Sock, it was all about the adrenaline of being so close to a spot in the French Open draw and wanting to win. Sock’s determination (and his powerful serve) helped get him there.

I asked Sock whether or not he is satisfied with where he is at right now, in terms of his competitiveness. His response: “I’m pretty satisfied. I mean, there have obviously been a few matches here and there that could’ve gone better, and moved me up the rankings, but that’s tennis… but I feel competitive with anyone I play.” Before he headed out to the other courts to cheer on his fellow Americans who are also looking for a spot in the draw, Jack had the following message for tennis fans: “Thank you for all the support and positivity. Hopefully I can bring some great moments to you throughout my career.”

After the French Open, it’s on to the grass season for Sock. He will be playing Nottingham, followed by Wimbledon and Newport, Rhode Island. In the meantime, you can catch him warming up for the first round of his first French Open.

I’m guessing that Jack Sock can’t wait to play, and I’m not kidding. http://www.parcbench.com/2013/05/24/...3-french-open/

Agreed, I don't think he will win. But it is already a great accomplishment for him to qualify on clay in Europe.

First RG maindraw win Jack looked good from what I saw (before the rain delay). His movement, slices, defense, and backhand looked much improved. A much tougher opponent awaits in Haas. Win or lose, it has been a great week

Quote:
The United States has been on the lookout for a breakthrough player since Andy Roddick retired last September, and with his 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round, 20-year-old Jack Sock showed that he has the chance to be that guy.

Despite a lousy clay-court season to date where he only won one contest, the tall free-swinger qualified for Roland Garros and on Tuesday, out-hit the veteran Spaniard from all angles of the court. Sock mixed big serves with hard forehands and two-handed backhands and avenged a defeat to Garcia-Lopez from just two weeks ago at the Bordeaux Challenger.

While he by no means played perfectly, he was the far more consistent player on the day, nailing 26 winners while committing 26 unforced errors, to only 13 winners and 38 unforced errors from Garcia Lopez.

A former US Open junior champion, Sock reached the third round of the 2012 US Open and won a Challenger title late last year.

“Some of these [young American] guys have that extra potential gear," former No.1 John McEnroe analaysed. "I like Sock quite a bit, but I don't know exactly what's happening as far as his commitment. I think he's made some positive steps.”

Sock will now face adopted American and No.12 seed Tommy Haas in the second round.

Default American Jack Sock wins French Open debut

Quote:

PARIS (AP) -- American Jack Sock made a successful French Open debut Tuesday while wearing initials on his shoes in honor of two friends who died recently in separate car accidents.

Sock, a 20-year-old from Lincoln, Neb., beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 and acknowledged mixed emotions afterward. One of the crash victims was a high school teammate, and the other was a friend he played with in juniors tournaments.

''They were both 21, I think - sophomores, juniors in college,'' Sock said. ''Kind of hits you out of nowhere. I was definitely thinking of them out there.''

Ranked 118th, Sock reached the main draw by winning three matches in qualifying. He has an unimpressive record on the green clay common in the United States but said Europe's red clay is different, and he likes it better.

''I'll always look forward to coming back here,'' he said. ''Growing up I didn't play a whole lot on it, but I loved playing on it when I did. Coming over here and playing on the real stuff has been great.''

Sock hasn't taken to the local cuisine, however. Instead he frequents a Mexican restaurant that is part of a U.S. chain.

''I'll be there as much as I can,'' he said. ''It's a decent cab ride from the hotel. I think I have been there six or seven out of 10 nights probably.''

Like fellow Nebraska native Andy Roddick, Sock wears his cap backward. He lacks Roddick's power but is a dogged baseliner with a tricky kick serve.

Sock played his opening match on remote court 3 and will likely be assigned to a bigger venue in the second round when he faces his frequent practice partner, No. 12-seeded Tommy Haas.

''I like playing in front of people,'' Sock said. ''I like the big stages. I mean, the more the merrier. It's fun.''

Sock made his first Grand Slam splash last August at the U.S. Open, where he won two matches. He's part of a new generation of U.S. players who have enjoyed some success in the first round at Roland Garros, even though clay is traditionally the worst surface for Americans.

Despite losses Tuesday by Lauren Davis and CoCo Vandeweghe, U.S. women are 9-5 in the opening round, with Jamie Hampton's match against No. 25 Lucie Safarova postponed until Wednesday because of rain.

American men went 4-6 in the first round.
