Aussie Davis Cup team Warsaw-bound

AUSTRALIA'S Davis Cup World Group playoff against Poland will be played on an indoor court in Warsaw.

The venue for the September 13-15 clash was announced on Wednesday as the 5000-seat Torwar Arena in the Polish capital.

The winner of the tie will qualify for the competition's top tier in 2014, with Australia aiming to return to the World Group for the first time since 2007.

Australia earned a shot at the playoffs after a team featuring Bernard Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt beat Uzbekistan in Namangan last month.

The recalled Guccione, Marinko Matosevic and US Open qualifier Nick Kyrgios left New York on Saturday to meet Davis Cup captain Pat Rafter and Tony Roche in Munich for a squad training camp ahead of the September 13-15 world group qualifying tie against Poland, to be played on indoor clay in Warsaw.

Tomic, who faded badly in his second round singles loss to British qualifier Dan Evans after opening with a five-set defeat of Albert Ramos, will fly out on Sunday night and Lleyton Hewitt will depart once his tournament is over.

Guccione? What the fuck. Piss off.

Matosevic, Tomic, Hewitt, then Ebden and Kyrgios.

Guccione should not be in the team full stop. He just shouldn't. He gave up on singles because he's lazy - if Tomic or Philippoussis did that they'd have hell to pay.

The rumour is that Guccione has taken a step back from singles due to his achilles heel tendon problems. His tendons flare up due to over activity in the intensity of singles matches, thus only plays doubles but will play singles if given a run in a tournament. His focus is now on doubles.
Will he be successful...

Not sure that his results warrant selection in the Aussie DC team though. I am surprised he has been selected. It seems that tennis in Australia is very much an "Old Boys Club" - from coaching, to selectors, selection and at the top governance of Tennis Australia. Nothing much has changed in TA over the years.

Look at Guccione's Davis Cup doubles record. Hasn't he not lost a match??
Lleyton plays best with Guccione.
Guccione has turned up after absences and still wins with Lleyton.

He deserves to be there. He always steps up.

Can you suggest a better doubles combination that Hewitt/Guccione?

They've been in zonals for years they should be winning the doubles.

Paul has had very ordinary results this year.
Also Fyrstenberg and Matkowski are just better versions of Paul.
Gooch at least has the big weapon and mix that with Hewitt's everything... gives us a good chance.

Paul is not a Todd Woodbridge.
