Ohhh I can help with this. I started at 3 doubles Junior Varsity and then ended up at 3 singles Varsity

Depending on where you live they may structure things differently. But across Colorado it is structured as such
__________________________________________________ _________
Junior Varsity (Where you may be unless you are really good).
-From lowest to highest
4 doubles
3""
2"" (you may end up here, depending on your schools skill level.
1""

3 singles
2 ""
1 ""
___________
Varsity-
4doubles
""
----
3 singles

Honestly the best way to succeed in high school tennis is focus on either doubles or singles (I played doubles for three years, till senior year when I changed to singles. Although I did ok, I found out I am a much better doubles player). If you find out you suck at double don't try out for it, same goes for singles. Do your best in try outs and be polite and a good sport with your team. (High school tennis is a great way to meet awesome people )

In relation to work outs. It is all up to you. If you have ambitions to be number 1 singles then staying a little after practice and or going for some runs can definitely help out. If you don't then doing whatever your coach makes you do will probably suffice.

Oh also if you are on J.V there is no State. That is only varsity.

If you have any questions, pm me.

Lenders: One thing people need to understand about this so-called weak era is that it was 'weak' for Federer on HC and grass and for Nadal on clay (Federer on clay too Nadal apart) because they were so much better than anyone else, for any outsider the era couldn't possibly be any harder, during 5+ years you had to either beat the best grass/HC player ever or the best clay player ever in every single Slam just to get 1 Slam title.

I'm not as clueless (or bad), as you think

My brother was number 1 singles at my high school (yes, varsity) and I consistently beat him. I've played the 3 doubles player and beaten him 6-0. I can also beat the person who was at 1 doubles. I've never played anyone else though...

I should definitely be singles on varsity. My team isn't very good though. No one has ever made state from my school My brother got 3rd at Regionals 1 singles a couple years ago, and then declined

I'm just wondering if I do get singles, should I opt for a lower position? I've always wanted to make state... So let's say I get 2 singles, should I ask if I could play 3 singles?

Haha that's when things get gray.

For example my junior year I was 3 doubles varsity and played against an exchange student from spain who was 1 singles.... I mean 3 doubles. The coach clearly stacked the team and he was berated by our players and coaches, yet not much happened. Obviously it is not ethically right, but it is up to you and your coach.

Honestly though, I'd say if your confident enough in your game, go for 1 singles, no reason not to.

Also seeding for regionals is based off the regular season. Also to qualify for state you need to be first or second in regionals, or win the losers bracket.

I'd say for your freshman year go for the goal of qualifying for state. Qualifying is not the hardest thing, but once you are at State, you will have to play all the country club raised tennis seniors, who are probably being scouted by colleges. When you play these kinds of players, you just have to have let go of everything and just go for it.

Understand you have 3 years to improve and maybe at some point, win state!

Best of luck bud!

Thanks man

I know I'd get creamed at State, but just qualifying would be amazing

I don't think stacking happens much here though

I'll go for 1 singles

what do you mean? if he actually got any good and played in high school, who knows, he might be able to land a scholarship based on tennis and the college tennis system in USA is actually pretty good at developing tennis players, look at John Isner

I would definitely play in high school it's not like everyone has the funds to learn and become good privately and if Freakyman is just now considered what to about tennis in general than it is far too late for him to become trained in an academy

he definitely should play high school ball

College tennis holds you back. How many truly world class players have come through the college system? By going down that route you are effectively saying you won't be good enough at the top level.

I can relate to the thread title... almost! A few years back when I got excited about competing again, I entered a men's D-level tournament here in Finland... In the first round I was playing this guy who was clearly worse than me and I led 6-0, 4-1. Then I started to choke like hell and barely took the second, 7-5. I got too nervous about winning since I hadn't played a competitive match in a while! I started slicing forehands etc... Have never been so tight in my entire life I think .

in 1st round of a Men's Opens. He ended up beating me 6-0, 6-0, but I won 28% of the points, up from 20% the last time I played in an Open's back in March.

Wojcek would end up losing 5-7, 0-6 to former 1400 ATP doubles Adrian Chermaci in the next round.

Biggest thing is the serve, which must improve out of sight, and the back is the #1 thing holding me back, and toss. First point of the match, I hit what I think was a pretty good serve, he hits the return right on the line, 0-15. That set the tone for the match. On my own serve, I was under heavy pressure to hit harder, closer to the lines.

I was able to force a few errors from his return, I was able to hang in some rallies, particularly a BH-BH exchange where he was the first to error, and my forehand hung in well. Mostly, though, many DF for going for too much, he killed all 2nd and some 1st serves, I was on defense nearly immediately.

And the domino effect was that on serve, he was much more confident, and me more nervous. His serve wasn’t even THAT menacing, really, even so. I believe If I improve my serve, and can hold games, then he will feel pressure on his own serve, losing some mph, and his groundstrokes also losing mph, giving me more time.

I felt myself strong enough, at least for this level, and I will take some time off from the gym, and focus almost exclusively on the court, and mostly the serve. Also I need to get this back stronger, and as always, dropping some pounds, I am around 157-158 these days. All in all, a positive match. Next one is October 5.
