Default Why is Murray so bad on clay?

Mugray game perfectly suits clay. He is great in defence, he can run from side to side for hours, he spins ball quite well and his weak FH is less exposed on it, aswell as his bad second serve.

So my question is, why is he so bad on it? Zero titles on clay for guy with so many masters and one slam and " all around game"

Murray isn't that bad on clay. He was simply out of form this year and injured. He can easily beat guys like Ferrer, Federer or Tsonga on clay.

His game, like Lleyton Hewitt's is much more suited for faster surfaces.. Clay requires a strong offensive game to stay on top of the point as great defense doesn't necessarily get you back in the point whereas on faster surfaces defensive shots can do so. Look at why Rafa is so strong on the surface, he is very unrelenting and consistently makes you play defense.

Murray hasn't played a single 250 on clay in his entire career, so there's a reason why he has 0 titles. He's not really good enough to do any better than 500 level.

I don't think he possesses the weight of shot from the baseline or deeper to consistently pose a threat to the best players on the surface. I think he lacks motivation during the clay court season too.

He'll be 27 years old during next clay season and he never beat any of those players on clay and never came close winning any significant clay title, or any clay title. And you're saying 'he can easily beat Ferrer, Federer or Tsonga on clay'...Are you trolling?

10 years ago commentators were wondering why Hewitt wasn't "dominating" on clay. You kind of summed it up.

Another way of looking at it is that with that kind of gamestyle one will better someone who's playing bad by inducing errors however against someone playing well it'll be nullified. Leaving the match in your opponents hands.

Hewitt's played some good matches on clay in his career. My favourite in a losing effort to Canas at Roland Garros in 2002. 4 setter in well over 4 hours. Canas leveled the match at 2 sets a piece in a 2nd set tie-break after squandering a zillion set points. Epic.

Well said. Comparing a 'defensively' strong player's performance on and off clay is a good litmus test to determine whether they tend towards the pace-absorbing side of things or the grinder/percentage tennis side.

I think it is also highly interesting to note that there have been many more clay courters (especially in recent years) that have translated well onto the faster surfaces than the other way around. While the movement is certainly a factor here, I think it correlates exactly with the offensive/defensive game idea.
