Yes. despite that Murray was just a couple of sets from winning the whole thing and possibly would have had the majority of the match not been played indoors.

There is no explanation needed. He is simply rubbish on clay.

Surely we've had a Murray clay thread before? Delete this thread or merge it please.

It's because clay is his favorite surface. Whatever Murray likes he seems to be unusually poor at

Murray simply has no excuses for getting his ass kicked on clay day and day out. He's probably top 50 on clay. Even a guy like Isner is arguably better on clay than Murray and god knows when he started playing on the surface.

This list has him at #18. Or #16, depending on which time period you look at. Probably inflated somewhat due to his seeding, but still.

He doesn't know how to move on the surface or construct points, and his strokes (especially that forehand ) lack any penetration.

I agree with everything above. The same exact thing could be used to explain Federer's lackluster clay results over his career.

Whut.

This thread is going waaaaay off topic.

But Murray is the one to beat at Wimbeldon, unless Roger is 100%

* Slams Do Not Exist!

Lenders: One thing people need to understand about this so-called weak era is that it was 'weak' for Federer on HC and grass and for Nadal on clay (Federer on clay too Nadal apart) because they were so much better than anyone else, for any outsider the era couldn't possibly be any harder, during 5+ years you had to either beat the best grass/HC player ever or the best clay player ever in every single Slam just to get 1 Slam title.

It's mostly his style of tennis. Murray like to hit some junkballs that lack both power and heavy topspin. On hardcourt he gets away with it, because those balls bounce lower and it's harder to be aggressive on them.

On clay Murray is easier to attack. It's his own fault really. If he ditched his crappy junk shots and went for more heavy forehands or at least actual moonballs (high bounce is also hard to attack, especially from the BH side) but instead he often gives the opponent command of the points.

That might work well vs the lower ranked players even on clay but later in the tournament, QF-> when he faces players in form or the top10, then it's not very efficient. He needs to win matches on his own rather than hoping for tons of errors or that hurricane winds saves the day. He is clearly capable of hitting both heavy forehands and backhands so his problem is mostly in his head. His junkshots are simple not as efficient on clay, yet he plays clay like any other surface.
