Default I'm 5'3/Male, how do short people fare in tennis?

I'm 23, and I want to play tennis. Not professionally but as a hobby. Not just for fun, but I want to be good at it. The problem is, I'm a midget ala Cibulkova.

Am I at a disadvantage with my height? This will probably my first time playing tennis, I don't know how to play, but I grew up watching tennis.

So, how do short people do in tennis?

You will not be able to create angles and flat serves (especially flat out wide) the taller players are able to hit. Even Federer who is 185cm and regarded as an excellent server has to put a lot of topspin on his serves. At 5'3 you will literally need to spin every ball into the service box. Not that I am saying you can prevent your serve from being a liability. It will simply never be a weapon. A tall guy can simply hit an insane flat first serve because of the height factor alone.

Even guys who are 5'8'' can have a pretty good serve.

At 5'3'' it will be even more difficult, but not impossible, nothing is impossible.

Olivier Rochus was 5'6'' and he was top 30 for many years.

Your serve will only be shit if you believe it will be shit. Get that serve in, and develop your baseline game especially.

Thank you for inspiration Does that mean I should wear high heels for extra height?

This will be my first ever time playing tennis. I don't even know the basics, so this will be a fun summer.

But what are the advantages of short people?

I'm 5'8 and male and my 1st serve can be a weapon, but it's erratic. Then again, that's 5 inches difference. I was 5'3 freshman year of high school though, and played #6 on my team, relying on winning return games.

It's hard to get a consistent big serve in even at my height so that will be a major issue. But there's no reason you can't play otherwise.

What surface will you be playing on OP? Hard or clay?

Most likely HC community tennis courts. Although I dream of ever touching a clay surface though.

hahaha spot on

I mean what do you mean, OP, children can play tennis perfectly fine, they just temporarily sometimes adopt more looping strokes and serves to compensate for their height
you won't be bombing 100 MPH serves but you should be able to play just fine. I mean I believe one of the Rochus's is only a few inches taller than you yet is pro

but I am not sure if your question is sarcastic or not, you surely are aware that 5'3 is incredibly short for not only tennis but for men in real life
for gods sake the womens average height in tennis is way taller than that, but all the same, once again there are pro women who are that height who are great tennis players
it doesn't have any affect on your ability to play except obviously the serve which is but a small part

precisely, if it's on clay then it won't be a totally dooming fact but on hard court the height limit will make it difficult to compete even recreationally

No problem, man.

Being short, you will DEFINITELY have the advantage of better movement and speed around the court than taller players. Use this to your advantage. Be crafty, and smart around the court.

Default Re: I'm 5'3/Male, how do short people fare in tennis?

Well, it really depends.

I'm 5 foot 6 1/2 inches or 1.689m. Not as big a difference as you, but it still causes some difficulties. Because my wingspan and my legs are shorter, I had to develop Djokovic like athleticism to improve my defense. I'm literally sliding and jumping to balls.

For the serve, Topspindoctor is wrong. You can still hit a relatively flat, decent pace serve. Me and Rochus both do this. Just have to accept you have lower net-clearance and you will probably double fault a lot.

The biggest problem that comes with lack of height is topspin balls. You either have to start taking the balls really early or jump up 3 feet to hit high balls. It's a lot harder for you than it is for me.

I hope this helps, but only way is by playing.

You are most certainly at as disadvantage.

My advice: just go out there to have fun, don't be overambitious.
