Igbinovia Tops Future Ranking
By Femi Solaja, 03.22.2005

Guinness Tennis

The International Tennis Federation (ITF), Monday, released the entry list for the Men’s singles draw of the 19th Guinness Futures taking place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin city.
The entry list for the Futures 1, which was made available on the website of the tennis ruling body, has a Nigerian player, Jonathan Igbinovia, being among the top eight seeds in the Men’s singles draw.
Interestingly, four Africans are among the eight seeded players for the event, whose main draw serves off Monday.
Top on the Men’s singles draw is Briton David Sherwood, who is ranked 273 in the world. Closely on his heels is Togolese Komlavi Loglo, who is ranked 440 by the ITF.
Russian Evgueni Smirnov is the tournament’s third seed while Raven Klaasen of South Africa is seed four. Klaasen, is not unknown in Nigeria, having participated in at least three Futures event, in fact, winning one at the 2003 Governor’s Cup held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos.
Ghanaian Henry Adjei-Darkho is the fifth seed while Tony Holzinger is seed six of the tournament, closely pursued by Igbinovia, who is ranked 558.
Adjei-Darkho, like Loglo, is at home in Nigeria. The young boy from Ghana has talents to become perhaps the best in the sub-region and that much he showed at the last Futures he played in Nigeria, last year.
Making up the top 10 seeds of the tournament are Russia Vadim Davletshin in seed eight, Jan Stancik of Slovakia as seed nine while Valentin Sanon from Cote d’Ivoire is the tenth seed of the tournament.
Meanwhile two new tennis courts have been constructed, bringing to six the number of courts to be used for the hosting of the 19th Guinness Futures starting this weekend in Benin City, organisers of the event have said.

Confirming this development yesterday in Lagos, tournament director of the point-awarding circuit, Segun Oguntade, said the construction of the new courts, besides the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, would not have been possible but for the financial assistance of Guinness Nigeria PLC, sponsors of the tennis event.
He noted that the additional courts would ease the problems of playing some matches at the Benin Club, recalling the precarious situation which players and fans faced during the last editions of the tournament.
The two new courts, it was learnt from the organisers, are due for commissioning on Monday by the Governor of Edo state, Lucky Igbinedion

Guinness Tennis: Maku, Babalola Crash Out

This Day (Lagos)

Lagos

Two of Nigeria's Davis Cup members, Sunday Maku and Abdulmumuni Babalola, yesterday, crashed out in the first round of the Guinness Ogbe Hard Court Tennis Championship holding at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.

The two Nigerians, who had gone into the tournament hoping to make amends for their poor showings in past tournaments, simply did not have the stuff to deliver against their less fancied foreign opponents. Maku, who played against Russian Alexander Kudryavtsen, ranked 1035 in the world, lost in two sets of 6-4, 6-2 while Babalola, was simply out of sorts in his tie against Egyptian Motaz Abou. The Young Egyptian, who has a poor ranking point of 1118, as against Babalola's 1019, still had the stuff to beat the Nigerian 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. At the end of the two matches, the Nigerian duo, were in a state of shock as to how they exited the tournament so early.

In other first round matches played yesterday, three Nigerian ladies advanced into the second round. In one of the matches, Omotayo Ibrahim beat Alice Izomor 6-0, 6-4 while Blessing Anuna defeated Beauty Oghenekevwe in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the third match, Julie Uwagoe walked over Japan's Sayaka Yoshimoto.

Meanwhile, first round matches would be completed today with the likes of the only seeded Nigerian player, Jonathan Igbinovia seeking to redeem the image of the country after a dismal outing by his compatriots. Igbinovia plays Slovakia's Jan Stancik.

(from the 31st of March)

The last man standing, Igbinovia, crashes out
By Christian Okpara
NIGERIA'S last hope of winning the Men's singles of the 19th Guinness Tennis Championship, Jonathan Igbinovia, yesterday crashed out of the competition holding in Benin City, Edo State.

The home boy, who came into the tournament with high hopes of getting at least to the semifinal stage, was sent packing in two straight sets of 4-6, 6-7 by Slovenia's Luka Grecorc on the Centre Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Igbinovia's defeat was too much a bitter pill to be swallowed by the home crowd, who came to cheer their local hero to victory, but their desire for a famous victory could not help the player who appeared out of sorts in the tie.

The first set was a little close but once the Slovenian broke Igbinovia's serve, he never looked back in the set, winning 6-4.

If the opening set was close, then the second could best be described as an epic battle as Igbinovia fought hard in a bid to take the match into a decider but a much determined Grecorc remained resolute and decisively won the tiebreaker to qualify into the quarterfinals.

With Igbinovia's exit, no Nigerian is left in the Men's singles draw of the $15, 000 tournament.

Also yesterday, Togo's Komlavi Loglo, Ghanaian Henry Adjei-Darkho and Zimbabwe's Genius Chidzikwer, all sailed into the quarterfinals, which hold today at the same venue.

Ibrahim, Nigeria's last survivor, crashes out
By Christian Okpara

NIGERIA'S last hope of winning a medal at the on-going Guinness Futures holding at the hard courts of the Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, evaporated yesterday as its remaining entrant, Omotayo Ibrahim, crashed out of the competition by losing in two straight sets to Venezuela's Mariama Muci 4-6, 2-6.

Ibrahim, who put up a splendid fight to qualify for the quarter-final, could not muster enough energy and skill to overcome the crafty Venezuelan, who controlled the game effortlessly throughout the encounter.

Had Ibrahim managed to scale Muci's challenge, she would have been the only Nigerian in the semi-finals, which hold today.

Instead, Muci now joins Romanian, Diana Tranteanu, Rebecca Dandeniya and Jessica Weyreuter in the female semi-finals, just as Raven Klaasen of South Africa, Henry Darkho of Ghana, Luka Grecorc of Slovenia, who eliminated Nigeria's Jonathan Igbinovia on Wednesday and Russia's Vadim Davletsin will contest the semi-finals in the male category.

Since the beginning of the championship on Monday, Nigerian players have not fared well in the competition, which its entrants used to dominate in the late 1970s and the 1980s through David Imonitie, Godwin Kienka, Nduka Odizor, Tony Mmoh, amongst others.

Nigeria's male players started the losing trend with two of its Davis Cup members, Sunday Maku and Abdulmumuni Babalola, crashing out in the very first round of the competition on the opening day.

The Nigerians, who had gone into the tournament hoping to make amends for their poor showings in past tournaments, simply did not have the skill to survive the onslaughts against their less fancied foreign opponents.

Maku, who played against Russian Alexander Kudryavtsen, ranked 1035 in the world, lost in two sets of 4-6, 2-6 while Babalola was simply out of sorts in his tie against Egyptian Motaz Abou. The Young Egyptian, who has a poor ranking point of 1118, as against Babalola's 1019, still had the stuff to beat the Nigerian 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

Although all the players have been talking of making amends in the Guinness Futures 11, which begins next Monday, spectators believe that only a miracle can change their fortune in the competition as the foreigners have demonstrated their superiority in this championship.
