Cilic will be channeling his inner Edberg in the doubles...

Spain vs. Ukraine, oh I hope Nadal plays and annihilates Dolgopolov's funky game like he always does

Good chance for Austria, Melzer will be peaking by september and Thiem should get one win from the singles.

Wow can't wait for Tomic v Janowizc. I except that tie to come down to the final rubber, should be awesome.

Please. Thiem isn't winning anything. Melzer will probably lose one out of two.

Doubles, I think Rojer can clinch it for us.

really?

Columbia/Japan will be a really close tie. Nishikori should win both of his matches but both Falla and Giraldo should beat Soeda/Ito/Whoever else, and Cabal/Farah is a good doubles team, better than anything Japan has.

Coin Flip tie if you ask me.

Thiem should be able to secure a victory against either Sijsling or Haase. The doubles are also uncertain. Austria big favourite in this one.
In case Haider-Maurer will play then Holland would be favourite.

I like Thiem, but no way he's "able to secure a victory against Sijsling or Haase" ! He just lost to Gicquel this week...
He's improving and I think he can take a set to those players, but to win would be an upset, so considering this upset "secure"...

Columbia is also my fav against Japan because I don't think Nishikori will play it.
But Japan will probably choose a very fast surface which can help them especially against Giraldo (Falla can be decent in indoor)

Default Re: Davis Cup World Group Playoffs Draw

Spain vs. Ukraine - Spain wins easily. Even if Rafa and Ferrer doesn't play. At home the doubles is theirs. Ukraine might get 1 point if Dog plays off his head in 1 match. But more than likely 3-0 after Saturday, and who cares about the dead rubbers but Spain will likely win those too. 5-0 Spain

Austria vs. Netherlands - Austria is the seed but the dutch are slight favorites. Melzer is anything but consistent. He might win his 2 rubbers but even that is a question mark. The Dutch are at home and that will help. They should take the other 2 singles. Doubles is close however. If Melzer can pretend this is Memphis 2012, and they take the doubles Austria has a shot, but I see Melzer losing a match. 3-2 Netherlands

Croatia - Great Britain - Another close match. With Murray playing the brits should have at least 2 points unless Cilic pulls a shocker which I don't expect. They probably lose the other singles matches however so they need the doubles. The brits are slight favorites in the doubles so I expect they will come through but it's definately not a guarentee. Final dead rubber doesn't get played. 3-1 Great Britain

Switzerland vs. Ecuador - Lopsided as a match could possibly get. Ecuador might be lucky to take a set. I guess Fed won't be wasting his time with this, Swiss will win 5-0 event without him. 5-0 Switzerland

Germany vs. Brazil - Battle of 2 teams who were in the world group last year. If this were in Brazil They would have had a better oppurtunity here. As it stands I'm expecting Brazil #2 to lose both matches. Does Haas play Davis Cup anymore? If he does Brazil might get shutout, otherwise Bellucci might snag a point from the German number 2. Assuming they don't play on clay I think the doubles favours Germany as well, but I'll give Brazil the benefit of the doubt and give them the point there. 3-2 Germany

Australia vs. Poland - This is the match I'm looking forward to the most. Jerzy should beat the Matosevic, and Tomic should beat Kubot. The other 2 singles matches are quite close. I'm guessing Australia probably needs both as I think Fyrstenberg/Matkowski is too strong for anything Australia will bring, especially since it's in Poland. Jerzy will scream Tomic into submission, and Tomic will probably have mentality checked out for the season by that point anyway. Another tough playoff draw for Australia. Dead rubber doesn't get played. 3-1 Poland

Belgium vs. Israel - Both countries were don't after Saturday in the WG. Belgium saved some dignity by taking the meaningless Sunday matches. Sela has gone MIA lately, so this will be tough sledding for Israel. Weintraub will pull the upset early as he always plays well in Davis Cup, but Sela will lose both matches, and Weintraub won't get done twice. Israel takes the doubles and Belgium takes the final rubber. 3-2 Belgium

Japan vs. Columbia - If this were in Columbia then I'd really like Columbia to come through. In Japan however this one is interesting. A healthy Nishikori should win both his matches, but I'm liking the Columbians in the other 2. On clay Cabal/Farah would be heavy favorites to take the doubles. It's closer in Japan but I think they do it anyway. 3-2 Columbia

Croatia away isn't so bad. Just need Andy to win both his matches and then win the doubles, seems pretty likely.

Good Draw for us Germans. If we choose grass. Kohli and Haasi (or Funky Flo) should beat Brrasil without problems.

But I guess we are going to choose Indoor Hard. This should be enough as well. Can't see Bellucci winning both Matches!

Default Re: Davis Cup World Group Playoffs Draw

Spain v Ukraine
I expect one of Nadal and Ferrer to play (probably Ferrer), but even without them (with Almagro and Verdasco, Lopez...) I expect an easy Spain victory. In theory, even if Dolgo would beat both Spanish players, Spain takes the doubles and I don't think Stakhovsky can beat anyone (given that they at least call the likes of Almagro, Verdascoo, Granollers...) I'll say 4-1 Spain.

Netherlands v Austria
Haase and Sijsling will both beat Austrian #2 (Thiem?), so Netherlands basically has 2-0 lead. I like Austria's chances to take the doubles and I expect it to come down to Melzer winning both singles matches, and I don't expect it to happen (as he is in shit form for God knows how long now). I expect him to beat 1 of them (I guess Haase). 3-2 Nethrelands

Croatia v Great Britain
Murray is playing, right? Then, for me to even consider this tie, Croatia has to play with both Cilic and Dodig if they want to ge 2 point off the GB's #2. That said GB doubles will beat Croatian doubles (Croatian doubles team sucks on a major scale). It will all come down to Cilic and if he can finally close it out against Murray. I give him 15 to 20% chances. 3-2 GB

Switzerland v Ecuador
Who even plays for Ecuador? Is Capdeville Ecuadorian? He's the only one I can think of. Wawrinka and Chiudinelli should get it done after Saturday and let juniors play on Sunday. Let's say 4-1 Switzerland (pity point for Ecuador)

Germany v Brazil
If Germans are smart they will not play on clay. But knowing they, for some reason, tend to pick clay, if they do I would expect Bellucci to win both singles (if Haas doesn't play and I don't think he will) and Brasilian #2 to lose both. Germans would have the upper edge in the doubles. If they pick other surface, then it will be much easier for them. 3-2 Germany

Poland v Australia
Match of the round for me. Poles take the doubles, Janowicz and Tomic both beat Kubot and whomever plays for Australia (except if Hewitt rolls back the time). Chances for Kubot to beat Australian #2 are the same as for Au #2 to beat Janowicz. I'll say 1 point each there. Tomic-Janowicz will decide. Hmmmm hard one. If Tomic shows up, then he wins, if Tomug shows up, Janowicz takes it. Lets put hopes into Tomic and say 3-2 Australia

Belgium v Israel
I fully expect Belgium to win. Sela is out of form and Amir isn't good enough to bring 2 points. Not much to say, Israeli are the underdogs in all singles matches, I don't really know about the doubles. 3-2 Belgium

Japan v Colombia
Nishi takes 2 points and Colombia take doubles. Pick a surface that suits Soeda or Ito the best. I expect Japanese #2 to beat 1 of Giralo and Falla. 3-2 Japan

On clay Murray may lose to an inspired Cilic.
