Indian Wells is always like that. Only difference this year was the heat, makes for a higher bounce.

Can't remember the Indian Wells bashing from last year when Federer won it.

Read my posts from last year and the year before on the matter if you can bother to use the search tool.

The quality of tennis aside from bits of Blake-Tsonga, bits of Delpo-Muzza and Delpo SF and F was complete dross. The court speed favours unforced errors and ugly tennis.

Yup, regardless of the results, the courts are a disgrace for hardcourts. In a bizarre way, it probably helped Del Potro in his run to the final because his FH is the only shot in tennis today than can consistently penetrate this type of courts; Djokovic's defense was enhanced of course, but the courts were so slow that he had a very hard time hitting through even a notoriously slow mover like Del Potro.

I think Nadal was the only player with a positive W-UE ratio in any match from QF on.

Hmm...no. Ugly tennis would be favoured if the courts were too fast but according to you that wasn't the case in IW.

The lion's share of your players favour slow courts hence your bias.

That match really showed how great faster courts are. On slow courts, to succeed you need to be fit like Nadal or Djokovic to grind every shot or big-hitting like DelPo or Söderling to hit throughe. But Stepanek is neither a grinder or ballbasher, but on a faster surface he can do well because of great tactical playing. On faster surfaces you don't have to grind that much and fast surface enables you to take the time off from your opponent even if you aren't a big-hitter.

Variety is the spice of life. Similarity breeds boredom and contempt.

Similarly too fast playing conditions with racquet/string tech of today leads to shorter points, short matches, less advertising for sponsors, less money for the tour. Pure talent with adequate athleticism usually overcomes strong athleticism with adequate talent.

Similarly too slow playing conditions, whether by court speed or ball bounce or both leads to more injuries when points last too long on unnatural hard surfaces, and a very real benefit to the potential use of performance enhancing drugs for endurance and recovery. Strong athleticism with adequate talent usually ends up overcoming the more skilled but less athletic player. But longer points and matches means more money to the tour, as long as people continue to watch.

Similarity in playing conditions leads to domination of the tour by the group of players best suited to those conditions.
Variety leads to a variety of players being able to do well on their particular favorite conditions or for the rare players that are able to adapt well to different playing conditions.

Similarity or variety can be mostly regulated by the court surface, the balls or both.
For the good of the sport, get the mix right ITF/ATP.

Janko Tipsarevic and Devin Britton on the slowness and similarity of courts today (0:35)

This series made at this year's Indian Wells starts with the one below which introduces young Britton and gives one a feel of what exposure to pro tennis is like for a young player

Default When will ATP speed up courts?

This is just getting ridiculous now. I know both Murray and Ferrer are defensive players, but jeez, they could have had a much better match on Faster courts. Not only are the courts killing Tennis, but they're killing the players too. Just stop it already.

Mugs.

The ATP will never answer our prayers. We'll be treated to years and years and years of terribly slow courts filled with pushing and grinding, accompanied by a myriad of unforced errors.
