If you try to change direction from a bit futher back the only way to create enough angle is to aim for the edges, then you could easily miss it. Another option is a dropshot but if you accidently get it a big high/long the opponent might run in and smash home the point...

Often it can be a safer bet to aim for the middle with a lot of power, keeping the opponent pinned way back because he's more likely to miss one of the looped defensive shots than you are to miss. Only in very rare scenarios the opponent can counter with his own offensive shot from way back. Those are very high risk shots that miss most of the time.
You will never know how grateful I am, you just solved one of the biggest doutbs of my life

Freaky.

It is a shame Europe has fallen way behind China in TT.

Last big win for Europe was Schlager in the 2003 WTTC which was amazing in itself.

true. It saddens me because that sort of kills interest in Europe too. The best ball talents will pick other sports. I mean how are you supposed to compete with a country like China where it's like national sport and the best start 5-6 years old in giant schools and then practice 10 hours a day, every day.

Not many europeans are prepared for a sacrifice like that. But table tennis is a sport where you can't really out-power or out-run skill, like in tennis.

Here's some amazing doubles points. Look at those asian freaks But Schlager spoted at 1:34

Table tennis is an amazing sport. Not appreciated at all by the masses. Here in The Netherlands it's condemned as a 'camping sport' (a sport you play while on holiday on a campsite, wearing flip flops).

In doubles you can get some of the most extraordinary rallies in any racquet sport!

Kind of funny Schlager has a WTTC win but guys like Boll and Samsonov have failed to win a big tourney like the WTTC or Olympics even though they are way more consistent than him.

Sort of like a Gaudio v Coria comparison lol.

yep. But in individual tournaments it's a lot about tactics too. Sometimes you can defeat a superior player with some troll-table tennis.

Look at what Maze does in this vid. But just like the vid points out it's not gonna work in the long run. In individual matches however an either ultra defense tactic OR ultra offensive tactic can probably work vs a superior chinese player.

And since it's a thread about great points, why not

The main tough thing to win the WTTC for a European is that most likely they have to beat 3 or at least 2 Chinese players from the QF onwards.

Guys like Boll and Samsonov could beat 1 of them but can't continue to beat the others.

A serious task to beat 2 top Chinese players in a row.

It was probably even harder when they played to 21. Now when it's to 11 it should be easier to at least get a good start of the match.

Maybe lower it to 7 in the future.

Imagine if they played TBs in tennis to 11 or even to 21. I predict the top players would have much better TB ratios then.
