I think Simon's confidence is shot at the moment. Frankly I prefer watching him play like that than trying to ballbash everything. At least he has some kind of base he can build on.

Also it wasn't an injury or Klizan would have taken a proper MTO, it was cramp which was down to Simon digging in on every Klizan service game.
This is what the ATP site said as the reason he retired. Cramping after a couple sets indoors...

If Gilles will be a bit more aggressive he'd be 10 times better. So many times he had chances to make a shot but settled on just pushing the ball into a corner.

Klizan played well but you could tell he was getting frustrated with the length of the points and would just want to bash the ball and ended up missing half the time.

The fighting spirit of Gilles and the way Martin saved BPs were brilliant! Weird match overall, Gilles was there for everything in 1st set but couldn't win any BPs, Klizan had great chance to win in 2 if he didn't cramp. Now great chance for Gilles to win the title, Benneteau and Dimitrov/JMDP are so beatable for Gilles.

Interesting match actually, that setpoint in first set was outstanding. At 7-6 2-3 40:15 I believed Klizan could handle it in two sets, then cramps occurred ..

I think his fitness is ok, he works hard every day I think it was due to lack of tough matches played in recent time plus Simon literally wored him down.
But of course, Martin needs to work even hard to get there.

In play he was as good as Simon, only thing to improve is his stamina, which is good because it can be improved. Still strange he cramped after set and a half, given his 4 hour performance against Youzhny in St.Pete, then off to doubles semis and back next day winning a final.

Simon was 1/21 on BPs at one point
Simon did very well to hang in there, unfortunate for Klizan in the end but I think Simon was going to win anyway
