Judging by the Dutch crowd he doesn't need to feel any pressure. Most of them don't even know who he is. When I take a pic with him at least one person asks me who he is. And the others just walk by and don't notice him. The crowd was very quiet during his match today as well. At least when I turned on the tv for the last few games.

The pressure he feels is probably not from the crowd though. You know Gilles, he goes crazy on himself even during practice.
Oh, will you share your pic with us?

Now I'm nervous because this is such a huge opportunity to pick up 180 points

Couldn't understand the first question, cause they talk through each other. Something with a grand slam? That's all I can make of the quiz with my little knowledge of French. It would be easier if it's subtitled, since I'm better at reading than listening.
Thanks for the help you could provide. It seemed like they were having a fun chat based on Gilles' reactions. Yeah I wish anything that isn't done in English had subtitles for non Native language speakers.

I was almost ready to pull my hair out yesterday morning during the Simon/Brands match. Gilles had something like 9 or 10 set points in the first set before he finally won it. I thought for sure he was going to blow it and find away to still loose the set despite being pretty much in control after the initial break back, but thankfully he held a lot more steady in the second set and got through, but in typical Gilles fashion, he still made it harder than it had to be even though it was in straight sets.

I don't know why, other than continued lack of confidence, he's taken so much off of his groundies. Even more than usual it looks like now. His serve has improved a lot though. Now if he could just combine both the better serve and his flatter faster ground strokes, he'd be in better shape going forward. Now that the draw has opened up some, at least to the semifinals were he might end up having to face some guy named Federer , I hope he can make the most of it.

True.
I'm curious to see today's double. I've never seen him play doubles.
I believe I shared it already, it was from 2010. But I just meant in general. Most people probably only know Fed.

You're welcome. I'm hoping a native speaker will help us out here. Maybe translate some more and confirm if what I understood is correct. I'm doing a French language course, but it's really hard and I'm only a beginner. Luckily Gilles doesn't speak too fast or unclear. Sometimes it sounds like Chinese to me, in interviews with Benneteau for example. He is really difficult to understand.

I was quite surprised by his performance today. But maybe that was because I expected the worst. I thought it was funny that Benoit said "Allez Gilles/Gilou" at least ten times per set. Even if it was Benoit's turn to receive. And at one point I was stunned, cause I saw Benoit walking to the net with his hand behind his back. So I thought they even did the signals and all. But when they switched sides and Benoit did it again, I saw he was just scratching his back.
Anyway, they were laughing all the time. They seemed very comfortable together and I have a (little bit blurry) photo with them That was Gilles fault though, I asked in French, Benoit agreed, but according to my sister Gilles said "très vite" and she hurried.

Ok, I want to help here. But my english is not very good. So I did what I could.

Several times he used the french world "rouste", which means a very bad loss or a very confortable win either you taking it or giving it, I translated it by "beat down". I realised that I don't know the english world for that, or it just doesn't want to come back to by mind. I should know that reading MTF, right? If anyone can help? Oh, and I didn't translate "Magnifique".

Interviewer: Gilles, lets make a small quiz: do you know where you're from in your tennis life? Because It's easy to remember the grand slam results but the career did not start in grand slam, right?
I: First question: do you remember your first match that counted for ATP point ?
Gilles: I think I remember it. It was a Future. I think it was at Valescure, I lost again Julien Mathieu.
I: Magnifique. 6-1 6-2.
G: Yes a beat down. You didn't need to say it.
I: First win for ATP points?
G: My first APT point? I remember it inevitably... It was at Nevers again Timothy Hertz(?).
I: OK, I'll accept it. It was at Nevers but not against Timothy Hertz, it's Jerome Almagrida. First round,2-6 6-2 6-4.
G: No, I'm sure it's false. I'm convinced it's not that.
I: Well, I will check it.
(It was Almagrida)
I: You won you're first future at Lisbon. June 2003.
G: I only pulled out beat down.
I: Precisely. How many games have you lost that week?
G: I did the qualifying.
I: We only count the main draw.
G: Because I pulled out two pretty nice beat down. 15 or 16?
I: 15. Magnifique! First match in Challengers?
G: Ah I remember it. Furth in Germany.
I: No Besançon. Florent Serra.
G: Oh yes, against Flo, I had the wild card.
I: You're best result in doubles?
G: Which level?
I: Futures/Challengers.
G: In futures, I won with Jo vs Ouanna/Monfils. That was a nice double.
I: Where?
G: Grasse. I won in single and doubles that year.
I: No ___(don't understand the name of the city).
G: No, I'm sure it was Grasse on clay.
(This time he's right)
G: If you don't know. I tell you it was Grasse, open McDonald. The only time in my life where I won in single and doubles.
I: Last question. Best double result in doubles on the ATP tour?
G: It's not hard, semis, I've only made it once, it was in Hamburg. With Jeremy. It tells you a lot about the level, it's only 10 years I've been on the tour...
I: Not bad at all.
G: But it's Grasse! Check it.
I: I'll do it.

Here’s the bit on L’Equipe after beating Brands yesterday:

Tense seems to be the theme for the past 2 weeks, cos he also said he was very tense against Brugues-Davi last week, and that he couldn’t hit hard from the baseline. In fact, he said he had a good 2 weeks of practice before Montpellier, and he was eager to do well to have something to show, and then he got tense. Brugues-Davi is like about 150 lower in ranking, you wonder why he would be tense facing someone who’s not suppose to give him trouble. I guess it boils down to lacking confidence? Feeling the pressure of being the overwhelming favorite. I guess it’s best to not expect he’ll have an easy time tomorrow, especially the opponent is so much lower in ranking. The match he didn’t look tense in recent memory was probably against Berdych, where he was the big underdog (despite the HtoH).

So cute that his teammate is cheering him on.
We laughed at his double play, but he had came a long way. The first double match I watched of him, I think it’s on clay in Germany in 2009, he was hardly at the net, pretty much play the whole match at the baseline, it’s like he couldn’t find the right timing to come to the net. Nowadays, he has much better reflex at the net and better placement of shots also. Still can’t say he’s good, but at least he’s not embarrassing anymore.

The English word “roust” or “rout” are the same meaning.

And thanks a lot for the translation.

I'm so unconvinced by Gilles tennis so far this year. He seems to be playing poorly for the most part, he has just had some nice draws early in tournaments to get a few wins. He keeps making odd errors that you really wouldn't expect from him on simple rally balls.

Anyway he has a huge chance to make semis only playing average tennis so he better do everything he can to take it.
