Nope, no mistake at all -- he needs match practice. It's not about titles or points at the moment -- just getting back to playing.

Nadal is in the twilight of his career. Milking his name for some extra money, vulturing some points so he can make a few more runs at grand slams, and going to South America after Federer to try and keep up in marketing was a great idea. His tards may think Nadal can win another GS but Nadal himself knows what caliber of events he has a chance in.

He has plenty to gain, ranking points and match practice for instance.
I don't think losing to Zeballos really hurts him, he's not in top form yet, so this result isn't a huge surprise.
Yeah, he's trying to lose at 250's, what with their ultra hard draws.

And what would you have him do? Play a grand slam or masters 1000 after 7 months of rest? THAT would have been mistake. You build your confidence up gradually, and MM events are perfect for that, even for elite players like Nadal.
Actually, he made 2 right choices: 1st was to skip AO (even if not for stomach virus, or whatever it was, he still shouldn't have played a grand slam as his 1st comeback tournament after such a long rest), and 2nd was to choose a rather obscure ATP tournament to tune up his game/confidence. Even though he lost in the final, I think he made the right choice.

You kind of contradict yourself here. Losing to Zeballos at MC would hurt his aura. But by going to somewhere he's never been before and losing a tight match, his aura is still perfectly in tact. |

Yes spot on, it's not a mistake that he's playing there, it's actually a very smart move, besides the appearance fees which we will never find out, he's helping to promote tennis while his name still means something. Is it coincidental that he just started his own company too? He's already planning life after tennis and will try his best to milk any extra money as he can. Also he knows the field in South America would be weak, less chances for him to lose because you can't promote anything if you are not the winner...some foods for thoughts |

money, marketing to South America, but most importantly to regain his confidence and form in time for the events he regularly plays
rather lose early possibly in some South American events and find his form than lose in the big matches during his most important part of the season at Monte Carlo, Rome, Roland Garros, etc.
it was a wise decision. South American clay swing is one of the only portions of the season that is ignored mostly by top dogs
the reality is that our online Poker Stars hero will either regain his form or he won't - the smartest decision is to try to find it as quickly as possible or realize as quickly as possible that it's not coming back
I think it will come back. but Nadal can only find these things out by playing in ATP matches and tournaments where his opponents are hungry and it just works out perfectly that there happens to be this stretch of small tournaments in February that he usually ignores
