There is a reason why Carpet is no longer used on tour, I assume a very similar reason is why fake grass isn't used.

I remember that Dominik Meffert posted in his blog that the Kyōto challenger 2011 was played on artificial grass. He obviously liked it, won both the singles and doubles titles
Here in Germany most outdoor courts are clay and most indoor courts are carpet. I've never played on a grass or a real hard court (only some crappy hard courts in holiday resorts).

Thanks VIPer7, interesting info. it seems that many guys agree that's the surface is slippery ... yet some guys like it. I guess with the improvement in technology it might be a valid alternative to HC. I'd assume that ATP tournament organizers would probably chose the best materials available out there. just my 5 cents.

as for Pierre's comment about carpet ... yeah I know. However, you still have many old timers who miss that surface because it's very fast.

accurate description. its kinda...grass with some sand, so inbetween grass and clay.
they are fairly easy to maintain, and that sometimes lulls the owners into not maintaining them at all. good choice for a private court.

The Irish Open is played on artificial grass. It's a 15k Futures these days.

players told me it plays quite slow. players didn't have any problem with their footing either.

the stuff I've played on myself isn't maintained at all though and is very slippery. it is sand based so tends to be more slippery dry than wet even.

I played on the artificial grass courts at Wimbledon Park across the street from the All England.

Basically its shit. Its sandy - lots of sand around for some reason. Its like the astro-turf at the driving range for golf. Public courts are also very worn down at the baseline so its basically carpet.

Its slippery because of the sand and not that fast. Nothing like real grass. I'd rather they have indoor carpet like at Queens Club than use this surface. Queens Club carpet is fast but also really bouncy.

To be honest though Wimbledon Park courts are better than 90% of the public Tennis courts around London. The ones in Ravenscourt Park is basically gravel and even the pay to play ones at Hyde Park suck.

I did not know that Henry, interesting. I looked at their web site but there is not much to see. just one pic of the court.

However, I've just found out that The Irish Open is the second oldest tennis tournament in the world (Wiki, first played 2 years after Wimbledon, 1879), wow. It had some amazing history and now it's only futures, so sad. Laver played there in 1970. Sorry, I'm derailing my own thread but I was just fascinated . Sure, I realize that the original Irish Open 1879 and 2013 are a completely different thing, but still.

At least you guys actually have public courts all over the place.

Trust me public courts in London are terrible. Courts in the US are mint when I was in New York.

I've played at the public courts outside the National Tennis Center (US Open) and they as good as the ones inside the center.

What we REALLY need in both the UK and US is free public (real) grass courts. Serviced by the public of course. That would be mint.

Disgusting surface, should be known as pathetic grass. Played it on many times it's awful, even the good courts are crap/ There are reasons that it's not a surface on the pro tour.

Oldies and slice merchants love it and of course it's nothing like real grass.

personally i liked it and i don't think it's more slippery than clay for instance.

There is something about it that isn't right though, hard to really define it. Perhaps the mixture of slow surface combined with low bounce and slipping slices is kinda awkward.

It suits my game so i do enjoy it, but i try not to play too much on it, coz it definitely screws your clay settings, you need to re-adjust every time, it's very different.
