Nobody's denying that golf is extremely hard. So is balancing 7 golf balls on top of each other. In fact that is so hard it has been done only once in the whole of human history. I don't think it's a sport though.

It's definitely a sport. Snooker and darts are not. But the fact these sports are not popular in France biases my opinion of course.

But i was not questioning the fact that it an olympic sport.  I just look at it, and then look at golf.... and well, in my very own biased opinion gold looks more of a sport than that. 
And how about cheerleading? Any thoughts? Is it a sport? |

No way is golf a sport, Tiger got more exercise banging his ladies than playing any golf match..

Now since Nadal won many of his titles against a clownish Federer, it means Nadal's victories are also cheapened.
And finally, since Nole beat a clownish Nadal in many of his slam victories, his achievements are further cheapened.
Conclusion: everyone is a clown, playing in a neverending clown era.

Yes, it involves technical skill and strategic thinking along with some adeptness in terms of physical movement of the body (torque, shoulder turn etc.). It isn't the most physically demanding but its a sport for sure.

As you all have included chess in this debate in addition to golf, let me put a few if my own thoughts forward.
I happen to play and compete in both 'sports'. Chess at a very high level, and golf at a 'learner' level (handicap of twenty).
So let's start with golf as this is the main topic. I certainly believe it's a sport. There's a common misconception that there's no physical elements involved to playing it, but I would say its quite the opposite. If anyone actually bothers to play the sport, I'm sure they'd soon find out that going through even nine holes is a physically demanding task, let alone a full eighteen holes. Not only the strength and control needed to hit the ball in to the desired location, also the stamina needed. There's an overlap between the mental attributes and the physical counterparts. Three hours of concentrating can take it out of you, so it's essential to possess a good level of stamina.
Chess isn't a sport, but it's still the most competitive activity that I know of, and this aspect *of it is under-appreciated. I think together with golf, it is the most mentally challenging game or sport, so anyone who is successful in either deserves far more respect than being labelled a fat bastard.

What I don't know is how chess is considered a sport. Checkers or battleship should be a sport too then.

When I say 'high', it's still nothing more than a hobby thay I'm very passionate about. There are no professional aspirations, but that doesn't stop me competing in lots of local tournaments while I'm still young. |

Nope, really not. I used to compete when I was around 8-9 years old (was around 3rd category level then), and had to stop not long after that, was always feeling sorry a bit I couldn't go all the way
