I don't personally like the term "mug", but he will never IMHO win a Grand Slam.

I see his ranking has slipped quite a bit recently, now 16.

He missed the AO injured which probably contributed to that

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
What, really, is wrong with his game - is it down to movement and his R.O.S?
Is it possible for a guy as big as he to radically improve?

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
If the USO gets speed up massively or Wimbledon returns to its late 90s-speed-level, he'd have a chance at a big final. But this is unlikely to happen the next few years and even if it does, Isner's already turning 28 this year, he's probably past his prime. I think with a very, very favorable draw and massive crowd support, he could just get to the semis in New York, but definitely no further. And he'd also need his very best form just to get this far. Perhaps he's already wasted this chance in 2011. He's just not slam final material anyway, by any means.

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
if he was playing the AO in the '70s, perhaps.
actually, scratch that, you beat Newcombe and Rosewall. 1980 AO - he'd win that, if in the bottom half.

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
He would do better at flipping burgers at Maccas than playing tennis.

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
His only chance is at RG. He's still very effective on his serve on it, it's more forgiving to his ROS, and the bounce is perfect for him to hit FH winners.

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
no he's basically an inferior version of roddick, and he also has the problem of playing on these slow surfaces so that further reduces any small chance he has of winning something big

He'll win Paris Tankers this year.

Re: Will John Isner ever win anything big?
If Grand Slams are changed to best of 3, I can see his chances increasing exponentially.
He just gets too tired, otherwise. Playing four tie-break sets and 28-30 at every match and all.
