Default Re: Losing against the eventual slam winner- An Open Era overview

The players who lost to Nadal at Roland Garros 2012 (in brackets the number of times they lost to an eventual slam winner):

Code:

F: Novak Djokovic (9)
SF: David Ferrer (4)
QF: Nicolas Almagro (4)
R16: Juan Monaco (2)
R32: Eduardo Schwank (1)
R64: Dennis Istomin (3)
R128: Simone Bolelli (1)
-Novak Djokovic lost his third Grand Slam final, two of those to Nadal. This is also the fourth time Nadal defeats Djokovic en route to a Roland Garros title.
-Ferrer lost to the eventual winner for the second time in a row (this is the first time it didn't happen in a quarterfinal).
-Almagro lost to Nadal in the RG quartfinals for the third time (2008, 2010, 2012 an even year pattern).
-Dennis Istomin is why this thread is fun. He lost (early) to eventual winners 3 times. He lost the 1st round of the 2006 AO to Federer and lost in the second round to Nadal at the 2010 US Open and 2012 Roland Garros. If he won't go down in history for his career achievements, he'll live on in this thread as the player with the worst luck at draws!

The players who lost to Federer at Wimbledon 2012 (in brackets the number of times they lost to an eventual slam winner):

Code:

F: Andy Murray (8)
SF: Novak Djokovic (10)
QF: Mikhail Youzhny (5)
R16: Xavier Malisse (3)
R32: Julien Benneteau (1)
R64: Fabio Fognini (1)
R128: Albert Ramos (1)
-Andy Murray lost his fourth slam final, three of those against Federer. He's also lost 6 times to the eventual winner this decade (out of 11 slams!)
-Djokovic lost to the eventual winner for the second time in a row and for the fourth time in a semifinal.
-Two of Malisses losses to an eventual winner were in the fourth round, almost nine years apart!

Default Re: Losing against the eventual slam winner- An Open Era overview

The players who lost to Murray at the US Open 2012 (in brackets the number of times they lost to an eventual slam winner):

Code:

F: Novak Djokovic (11)
SF: Thomas Berdych (4)
QF: Marin Cilic (2)
R16: Milos Raonic (1)
R32: Feliciano Lopez (4)
R64: Ivan Dodig (2)
R128: Alex Bogomolov jr. (2)
-Novak Djokovic has either won or lost to the eventual winner in the last 6 slams (and 8 out of the last 9)
-Berdych has lost to the eventual winner only four times, but all came in different rounds (apart from this semifinal loss that's the Wimbledon final 2010 against Nadal, Aussie Open quarterfinal 2011 against Djokovic and the 2006 Wimbledon R16 against Federer). That also makes a quartet of the big four. Well played, Berdych!
-Both of Cilic losses came in the quarterfinal. He also lost the 2009 US Open quarterfinal against Del Potro. New rule: if you want to win your first slam, beat Cilic in the quarterfinals!
-Dodigs two losses came in the second round.
-Bogomolov has lost to the eventual winner twice, both times in the first round. The first time this happened? Australian Open 2004 against Federer! God, I love this thread!

Bogomolov managed a very unlikely ultimate R1 loss improvement. From a Wooden Spoon in W to losing against the eventual champion in USO! That has got to be a first.

That beautiful moment when two meaningless records merge!

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

R128: Paul-Henri Mathieu (5)
-Murray has lost to the eentual Australian Open winner 4 times in a row.
-Murray has now lost to the eventual winner of a slam in this decade 7 times (in 13 slams). Is Lendls eighties record (17) in play?
-Ferrer, Berdych and Mathieu now all have lost to the eventual winner 5 times. All obviously while being slamless themselves.
-Stepaneks two losses both happened in the third round.
-Mathieu joins the select club of players who lost twice to the eventual winner in the first round. The first time? Wimbledon 2005, against Federer.

-Nadal has now lost to the eventual slam winner 7 times. 6 of those were finals.
-Djokovic has now won or lost to the eventual champion eleven consecutive times.
-Robredo has lost to the eventual winner 4 times in his long career. Surprisingly, three of those losses were in the last three slams.

-Both Murray and Djokovic have lost to the eventual winner often this decade (8 and 9 times). Lendls record of 17 is still in play.

Nadal only lost to Wawrinka in the 2014 slam final, but he isnt mentioned in that category in the first page of this thread. He deserves to be mentioned.

R128: Andrei Golubev (2)
-Djokovic has now won or lost to the eventual champion thirteen consecutive times. If I have time to spare, I will look up if this is a record. Only Lendl or Federer might have achieved this.
-Federer has now lost eight slam finals, trailing only Lendls 11.
-All of Cilic' losses to the eventual winner were in the quarterfinal.
-Gilles Simon is now the twentieth person who lost to the eventual winner in the third round, a group that also includes Stepanek.
-Golubev has lost to the eventual slam winner twice. Both in the first round, earlier this year he lost to Wawrinka at the Australian Open.
