I can still remember Wostenholme taking a set off of Emilio Sanchez the last time they met in 1991. I can picture Raonic winning his two matches. It’s plausible. Canada needs to resolve its doubles issues. In recent years, the only convincing win was against Israel. The rest were losses or close wins against low ranked teams.

You know canada really has been screwed over royally with the draw these last 2 years. They got quite easily the 2 strongest teams overall in the first round

if we cant beat france we are definately not beating spain..the only way we might is if nadal and ferrer are not there and i highly doubt both will be left off the team

Seems likely that Nadal won't be playing at least, which gives us a chance (albeit small). We must select the fastest possible surface and play it indoors to give us the best chance. Even then, Ferrer is a really tough opponent for Milos.

even if milos won his 2 singles matches you'd have to count on likely vasek winning one of the other rubbers and i dont think he could

and then it would come down to doubles and at this point spain has a stronger combination for a doubles team then we do

at the closest id give it 3-2 to spain

and why wont nadal play?

The timing of the rubber combined with Nadal's recent injury and likely an attempt on his part to reduce the number of matches he plays means that there is a very good chance Nadal won't play (not guaranteed, but I'd put it well above 80%).

well nadal is the only top player who actually likes playing davis cup so if he's fit and he sees the need to help spain get past this tie then i think chances are good he'd lay.

Wow, the draw has already been done.

I think Milos, on a fast indoor court, should win both his singles rubbers, and then it up to the doubles. On a slick indoor surface both Vasek and Frank would have a small chance against Ferrer, Almagro, and an okay chance against Lopez, who will likely be selected because of the surface choice. I give them a far better chance than they had against France.

And I don't think we should complain about the draw because they seed the teams, or at least that is my understanding, and of course we'd been seeded low.

Ugh! Terrible draw again, that being said at least it's at home, Spain on clay is impossible. I'm not expecting Rafa to play it, and if they go to Calgary on the slickest indoor hard court they can make Ferrer might not show either. Canada is in a good location for first round ties. A lot of players won`t want that long treck from the AO to play davis cup.

Yes there are seeds, but even so we could have drew Kazakhstan, we could have drew Croatia, we drew the #1 seed, it's a bad draw.

Milos should beat their #2. If Ferrer shows that would be a close match. Doubles will be tight, hopefully Nestor/Vasek can get back on track, they could beat Granollers/Lopez. I doubt Vasek/Frank beats their #2 and definately won't be their #1 so Milos would probably have to win both his matches but you never know.

It's probably 25% chance for us, but if we're ever gonna upset Spain we got the right conditions to do so here, home tie, probably indoor hard, likely no Rafa, maybe no Ferrer, right after the AO so more likely for top players not to go. It's better than In Spain on clay in May against Nadal/Ferrer that's for sure

I was kind of pulling for Winnipeg. When did they last host it? Maybe Winnipeg could host a tie of lesser importance.

I really thought Calgary, because it's due and the history of the tie against Sweden, plus it's cold (inhospitable) and would have a fast service (but that's true of every venue here).

As for the play, I can't see Milos taking out Ferrer. Milos has been off recently notwithstanding getting to the final in Tokyo.

Question: Is Vasek a better or that much better a doubles player than Dancevic? Would love to see Pospisil get the middle day off, but maybe this doesn't matter, he'll lose both the singles rubbers whether rested or not.

even if ferrer does not win both ties its just so hard to imagine vasek beating whoever plays the other 2 singles rubbers. Rafa plans to be fully fit by the australian open and if he is he might play davis cup

not terribly confident any doubles pairing we could put together could beat granollers/lopez either

I wonder how Frank's spending next week ahead of the Davis Cup tie, as he'll likely be playing No. 2 singles. You'd think he'd play in Maui, but he's not signed up. (He's not signed up for Heibronn, either, for the record - is ranked too low if he had wanted to.) Given how well Brands is playing, his loss to him wasn't so bad; nor his loss to Jesse the week earlier (he took a set off both). Given the quality of these two losses, Frank's clearly the choice ahead of Peter, despite Peter's solid play in Aussie Open qualies. (I suppose if Polansky gets to the final in Maui; depends too how they play head to head in practice.)

The other big question of course is who will partner Nester, with Vasek apparently out of commission - likely Milos ahead of Frank.
