Well, the altitude clearly makes this his best clay tournament regardless. He beat Nadal on red clay in 2009, after all.

Federer was close to Nadal in Madrid 2011. A day later, Djokovic beat easily Nadal 7-5 6-4 and he repeated that in Rome...

Results last couple years:
Madrid: 2009 - Win; 2010 - Final; 2011 - Semis; 2012 - Win.
IW: 2009 - Semis; 2010 - R32; 2011 - Semis; 2012 - Win.
Toronto/Montreal: 2009 - Quarters; 2010 - Finals; 2011 - R16; 2012 - Didn't play.

Clearly Madrid is the tournament Roger has had mosre consistent results the last couple years (even if you don't consider 2009).
The probability of Roger reaching the semis is way higher in Madrid than in IW or Montreal. Of course the probability of reaching the finals will depend if he draws nadal in the semis or not.
Also he has lost in madrid in 2010 and 2011 to nadal, both matches were rather close. He has lost to big-hitters in IW and Toronto/Montreal.
Did you see the US Open and madrid. Roger is less prone to losing against these type of players on clay. Of course he'll still probably have to beat nadal to win the title but if there is a a clay tournament Roger can do it in is Madrid.

Nah, I know that the ATP, as usual, catered to the whining complaints of the 2 divas djokovic and nadal. It was to be expected.

They move well on stereotyped and homogenized surfaces... Change something and they're doomed... unable to adapt

maybe because in the very fast surfaces they can`t use his physicall condition and returning all the balls waaiting that the rival lose the point.

for them , all the fast courts are a disgrace , they needs slower courts to run like horses or moonballing.

They're grinders who love to slide on everything. They rely too much on pushing their knees against the surface. Their knees will pay sooner or later (Pocahontas' ones are already sending worrying signs)

A loss is a loss. Fact is Hamburg and Madrid have always been Rafas least successful clay event out of the 5 he plays.

You are right that loss is a loss but behind every loss there is a reason and here Fed played good and Nadal was tired and hurting.....That's how you lose
