Check your counting!

How many times has Janko reached a quarter-final?

Belludal, I think Almagro is closer, to be honest. He's got a chance at Roland Garros. There's always an opportunity to be a semi-finalist when in Murray's quarter there.

Tipsarevic is a little less likely, because there's fewer upsets at the Australian and US Opens (where he plays best) so I can't see him doing it, especially as he is not a top eight seed. Wimbledon isn't a really an option for him. This year he got beaten by a decent Youzhny and last year by Karlovic. That's not future semi-final material, by any stretch of the imagination.

Almagro wasn't even close to winning in those three QF matches he played at RG, but understandable given he met Nadal in each of them.

Tipsarevic is/was closer IMO, because he held a winning position to be in a SF (unlike Almagro). Blew the chance of a life time in that 5th set, and hasn't been the same since

With regards to Tipsarevic, he had the benefit of being a top eight seed this year at the US Open, and Ferrer was his opponent in the quarter-finals. A golden opportunity, indeed.

With Nadal coming back, that pushes Janko out if the top eight, and also means he'll more than likely have to beat a top four member to reach the semi-finals. Something I don't think he's capable of in a grand slam.

Yep. Massive opportunity, and that was a heart-breaker. As far as we know (up to now), I don't believe he can ever reach a slam semifinal, even with/without Nadal being present. Hell, I'm not even sure he's capable of reaching another QF anymore.

But then again, who knows what the future holds. But currently Tipsy is definitely closer to date compared to Almagro, given how their respective QF matches have panned out.

Not unless he drops out of the top 12. Matches according to seeding:

R16: 5-8 play 9-12 and 1-4 play 13-16

QF: Winners of 5-8,9-12 play winners of 1-4,13-16.

Almagro has a better chance in my opinion, he's younger and has much more of a specialist Slam (needed for a big run). Almagro has beaten Murray at Roland Garros before (in 2008) and has been unlucky to draw Nadal in each of his best Roland Garros runs.

Yes, I know that already. I was eluding to something slightly different.

What I meant was his route to the semis would be harder. So in round four, as a 9-12 seed, he'd play a 5-8 seed. That's a lot tougher than being a 5-8 seed himself and facing a 9-12 player.

Consider it like this, there's a massive difference between playing Ferrer (#5) in round four of a grand slam and playing Monaco (#12) in round four of a grand slam. His quarter-final match would always likely be a top four player, but I feel his chances in that would depend on how fresh he is, so getting that easier fourth round match is crucial.

Tipsarevic.

None of them is likely to beat a top 4 player in the QF, but Tipsy can beat Ferrer, Berdych or even Tsonga in R4 to put himself in a position to try.

Almagro has no chance anywhere against any of Del Potro, Tsonga, Berdych or Ferrer. Even Tsonga on clay owns him H2H because Almagro is simply incapable of beating top players. Tipsy, on the other hand, always has a decent chance of reaching QF unless he draws Del Potro in R4.

I agree that Tipsy is closer, but not for the same reasons. They both have game and can be dangerous when playing good. But even though Janko is less of a choker, reaching SF without a top 8 seed is pretty impossible. The big difference IMO is that he is #9, and if a top 8 member is injured (which isn't so unlikely from my experience), it makes his chances much much better.

Probably Almagro. If he manages to avoid Nadal's half of the draw in the French, or Nadal goes out early, he'll probably make the semis there. Tipsy is a choke artist and I think he throws his matches at times...

Very likely scenario.

It's Tipsy. He has a good shot at the USO, should've done it this year to be honest. Almagro is just not good enough to win a QF
