I actually watched it this year

To be fair, I am not a fan of episodic procedural type shows anyway, except The X-Files. It definitely improved but that first season ensured I didn't have much good will for it.

I'll give you this, there are hardly any films after a book, that are better than a book (can't think of one). With scifi however, the books are released after the films.

Yeah, and those are all movies that fit the description of what I said, there isn't any real sci-fi in them, just action-suspense-horror-popcorn-mainstreamism.

Well you shouldn't judge film by what you see at the multiplexes.

That said science fiction is not a genre that lends itself to good film making because it generally requires a large budget. There are exceptions of course.

I grew up with loads of SciFi. Have watched Star Wars since I was 3-4 years old. I rabidly followed X-Files when it first aired, and am a big fan of the Alien franchise (not the bastardchildren please) and the first Predator.

Series I like are the aforementioned X-files, Babylon 5, and the all too short-lived Firefly.

love sci-fI! Ridley Scott's original Alien kicked so much ass, such a tense atmosphere and mood. I also thoroughly enjoy "Aliens" because colonial space marines with cheesy 80s action lines fighting xenomorphs is the coolest!

always dug cheesy sci fi too, like Arnold's "The Running Man" and movies with Dystopian societies

I am not sure if it counts as horror or sci fi or BOTH, but John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of my favorite movies ever

honestly haven't liked THAT many sci-fi tv shows besides the original twilight zone

if you want an amazing episode of old Twilight Zone there is one that's entitled "to serve man". kicks ass

Cinema, yes. Need to read some more sci-fi novels though. Blade Runner is one of my all-time fav films. Watched SW when I was 4/5 also, Empire especially is great fun.

In terms of sci-fi/horror (films) - The Thing, The Fly, Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Terminator are all dynamite. And love me some dystopian, ala Brazil, Twelve Monkeys etc. And there's a load of solid anime out there - see Spirited Away, Paprika, Nausicaa, Akira, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time etc.

And 2001, obvs. And Metropolis (original).

I think J99 should at least give us an example of a 'real sci-fi' film. Unless he/she think there are none, in which case I would suggest taking a look at asmazif and Taejin's lists.

Surely Blade Runner and other adaptations of Dick's novels count? I really liked A Scanner Darkly. Minority Report and Total Recall are good too.

ok first of all, mainstreamism is not a genre.
An argument can be made that Star Wars is Science Fantasy, if one were inclined to do so.

Both Alien and Predator however are Science Fiction films. That they can be classified as SciFi thrillers does not make them any less SciFi.

But why don't you give us your definition of true SciFi, then we can put an end to this bickering.

Yeah Verhoeven's of course, though I haven't seen the remake.
