Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?
yes, he did
more open, more brash, more confrontational, whatever you want to call it
sampras let his racquet do the talking
and history shows that he was right to do so
he's in the top 3 or 5 tennis players of all time and he certainly earned enough money to live his life comfortably
a success, whatever way you want to measure it
if you talk about who is remembered more by the general public, then its agassi
dating brooke shields and marrying graf didn't hurt his personality either
i appreciate both, but always preferred sampras. i liked watching agassi when he played someone else
when he played sampras he always got slaughtered

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?
Agassi was more popular with the general public; I'd say Sampras was at least as popular as Agassi with tennis-focused fans while they were both still playing and especially toward the end of Sampras' career. Listen to the crowd at their spectacular 2001 US Open QF match. Agassi turned off a lot of people with his "Image is Everything" ad campaign for Canon.
Late Agassi at the end of his career was something different but Sampras was gone by then.

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?
Agassi was way more popular, though within tennis circles it was more even-steven. Agassi had much bigger endorsements I believe, in fact I think he made pretty much more money with tennis than anyone else.

If i had a choice to trade places with one of them, it would be Sampras.

I AGREE! Sampras had a much better serve, net game and could hold his own against Andre with ground strokes. Watching their USO matches prove that. Andre was probably better on the slower AO courts. Pete, off grass and carpet, was not purely a serve and volleyer. Pete did not seek fan love, Andre craved it.

I never said Sampras wasn't a great tennis player but he was also a one dimensional, boring, tightwad, hangdog, mouth breathing, tongue out jerk. Nobody (you Mr. Nobody) liked him!

Pete was extremely popular with U.S. tennis crowds. I know this because I never liked the guy and sat in crowds cheering like crazy for him while I was the only one cheering for his opponent. (seemingly).
Agassi and Sampras was a near thing for crowds. It seemed to me it was rather evenly split when they played.

We yanks are very polite and will even cheer for jerks we dislike. I've actually cheered (gag!) for Nadal.

It was pretty funny that Agassi could never beat Sampas at the US Open. He was actually the clear favourite to win all 4 of their matches there. Failing to beat his biggest rival at the tournament he cared about the most, must have irritated him.
It wasn't really a case of fast vs. courts slow hard courts either, because I'm pretty sure that the US Open organisers slowed down their courts in the early 90s to favour mainly Agassi but also Courier and Chang (many other players commentated on that). On the other hand when Agassi beat Sampras at the Australian Open in 2000, the courts there were playing incredibly fast that year (faster than the US Open courts that Sampras beat Agassi on in 1995, 2001 and 2002).

It's because Agassi was better looking, and more glamorous.

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?
One of the Reasons why you are in Sports is because you are in a way in an Entertainment Industry. The way you attract fans to the game does really matter. And the reasons why People Like Agassi are popular was because he cared for the fans and attended to them. While Sampras was a Dour Player who just cared about Winning/Losing. Thats why he can never leave a Legacy like Agassi did.
