Re: Davis Cup F: Berdych/Stepanek (CZE) def Granollers/Lopez (ESP) 3-6 7-5 7-5 6-3
Very well done by the Czech guys today.
So far the tie has followed the script, but Spain deserve particular credit for an inspired performance by Almagro yesterday, and decent tennis by Lopez (in particular) and Granollers today. They didn't get a result in either of those matches, but they were more competitive than expected.
As others have said, the tie is now on Berdych's racquet which is EXTREMELY interesting. He has an obvious advantage against Ferrer tomorrow - hard and flat on a quick court. But, as is often the case with Berdych, nerves are surely bound to play a part somewhere. He hasn't moved particularly well this weekend, and isn't going to be physically fresh either. Ferrer can exploit all of that.
I'd also argue that Berdych is perhaps more under pressure. Ferrer has won Davis Cup before (albeit not as a team leader), so shouldn't fear losing. On the other hand, Berdych is unlikely to get a better chance than this. He would also know that if the tie goes 2-2, the Czechs have no better than a 50/50 chance in the decider.
I'd like the Czechs to win overall - it would be an incredible achievement (especially as regards Berdych's performances his year) and, as others say, Spain has won it enough. However, I would really like this to go to a live 5th rubber with Almagro playing (most probably) Rosol. I'm sure many of us are wondering just how Almagro would cope with the pressure, and whether Rosol can repeat his inspired performance against Nadal at Wimbledon...

how deluded you need to be to consider Granollers/Lopez as a world class pair. they are beatable on every day basis to any pair with sense for doubles

This tie is in Berdych's hands, we had to win the doubles to assure it since the blonde Czech has an advantage over Ferrer in indoor hard.
Well if they win cannot say it wasn't deserved

actually in my book Ferrer is beating Berdych tomorrow, but don't see Almagro beating Steps. Fan or not it's destiny that Sexy pulls this one out . Living legend this guy

Interesting stuff. 1975 sounded like such a gruelling campaign for Borg and Sweden. Borg is an absolute Davis Cup legend with a record 33 consecutive victories in the competition from 1973-1980. Sweden didn't have anywhere near as much depth in Borg's prime as they would later have in the 80s as well, when they had Edberg and Wilander plus so many top 10 and 20 singles players and talented doubles players to back them up.

WTF is based on the same crap format (no ad scoring, 2 sets and a MTB) as every other ATP event. Doubles in the Davis Cup is still based on the proper scoring system and played over 5 sets.

And as such, the far better team won today. Great performance by the Czechs.
Wow, tomorrow is going to be interesting - I don't see Steps beating Almagro, so it's indeed now for either Berdych or Ferrer to clinch the title.
Very interesting clash, I still hope for Ferrer to take it, but I guess Berdych, having the advantage on this surface already, will find another gear with the support of his home crowd.

Great match.
Spain is screwed now. Berdych has Ferrer right where he wants him.
