Re: Rank the the best players on the tour by surface
A lot of the lists seem to be career wise and that's what the OP prefers, so I am surprised to see no mention of Hewitt or Davydenko thus far.

Re: Rank the the best players on the tour by surface
Assuming you mean active players and not retired. Also assuming you mean their career rank on the surface not their current level:
Clay:
1. Rafael Nadal
2. Roger Federer
3. Novak Djokovic
4. Robin Soderling (active? I'll assume so)
5. Juan Martin Del Potro
6. David Ferrer
7. Nikolay Davydenko
8. Tomas Berdych
9. David Nalbandian
10. Andy Murray
Grass:
1. Roger Federer
2. Rafael Nadal
3. Lleyton Hewitt
4. Andy Murray
5. Novak Djokovic
6. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
7. Tomas Berdych
8. David Nalbandian
9. Tommy Haas
10.
Fast(er) Hard
1. Roger Federer
2. Novak Djokovic
3. David Nalbandian
4. Rafael Nadal
5. Juan Martin Del Potro
6. Andy Murray
7. Lleyton Hewitt
8. Nikolay Davydenko
9. Tomas Berdych
10.
Slow(er) Hard
1. Novak Djokovic
2. Rafael Nadal
3. Roger Federer
4. Andy Murray
5. Nikolay Davydenko
6. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
7. Lleyton Hewitt
8. David Nalbandian
9. Juan Martin Del Potro
10.

Re: Rank the the best players on the tour by surface
Is this ranking for their current state, or for their peak?
If it is for current state, anyone who put Nadal within top 3 in anything but clay is clearly delusional.

That's what I am wondering.
Is it career-wise (ie. their peak), or their current condition?

Re: Rank the the best players on the tour by surface
Grass:
1. Roger Federer
2. Andy Murray
3. Rafael Nadal
4. Novak Djokovic
5. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
In making the finals of both the Olympics and Wimbledon this year, I believe Federer and Murray firmly established themselves as the best grass court players this year. Like others, I'm uncertain as to where Nadal measures up due to his early exit and injuries, and the fact that the potency of his game fluctuates with the state of the surface.
Clay:
1. Rafael Nadal
2. Novak Djokovic
3. Roger Federer
4. Juan-Martin Del Potro
5. David Ferrer
I would put Del Potro ahead of Ferrer because of the former's ability to penetrate the court. Conversely, most players' shots are more likely to sit up for him to recover and take cracks at. He's part of that big hitting on clay campaign ushered in with Robin Soderling. I'd probably put Berdych at 5 if he weren't so wildly inconsistent.
Hard Courts:
1. Novak Djokovic
2. Rafael Nadal
3. Roger Federer
4. Andy Murray
5. David Ferrer
Hard to separate the hard courts into slow or fast because there are even sub-divisions within those categories. For instance, Dubai and the USO are both "fast", and yet still dissimilar. Worse is the distinction between IW and AO, the former being dreadfully slow compared to the moderate/tolerable speed of AO.

Hm.. I took a different approach where I tried to base it on their performances over the past couple of years. For most players I probably emphasized this one, but for Nadal I tried to rewind the clock a bit to compensate for his injuries.
Even still, it's not a stretch to place him in the top three for slower hard courts if one were to judge him on this year's AO.

Which tournaments do you include as "Slower hard"? I am a little curious, since Beijing is the only HC tournament, any speed, where Nadal has won more than Federer. I'd think three more AOs, two more IWs and two more Miamis would more than cancel out that....but perhaps none of these are slow(er)?
