Default Grading 2012: Ryan Harrison.

Over the next weeks, I'm going to post a few players and ask of you all to give your input on their seasons and how you would grade their season, in relation to what they did in 2011, in relation to what was expected of them this year, taking injuries and everything else into account.

First up, we have the young brash American Ryan Harrison, currently ranked 67th in the live rankings.

Started season ranked #78. Current ranking #67.

2012 Highlights:
SF's at San Jose, Eastbourne, and Newport.

R4 Indian Wells.

Competitive matches with Simon, Murray, Del Potro in slams.

2012 Lowlights:
2-4 slam record.

Three top 50 wins; zero top 20 wins.

Below .500 overall record.

2-7 finish to the season.

So, what grade would you give Ryan on his season? A to F votes are available. Vote up!

D.

If anything, his game regressed significantly. Awful pushing from way behind the baseline, no improvement with his 2HBH. Really just a huge step back, overall.

He claims to have bettered his mental game, but that's a load of bologna... His forehand is erratic misses a lot and his backhand is a liability. He has no real strengths to improve himself...

I'm tempted for an F, but that goes to Bernard Tomic.

Harrison needs to focus on his game, practice a lot more, make some part of his game a weapon.

Default Re: Grading 2012: Ryan Harrison.

I think Ryan deserves an F for the way he played during the hardcourt season in the fall. Overall season, I'd say a C-, so I voted C in the poll. He showed promising signs in his slam matches with Murray and Simon especially. And Simon in Indian Wells. He wasn't too bad against Roger in Miami. But he has not taken any step towards being even a top 50 player, let alone a top 10 talent. His game is not where it needs to be, and his attitude is not where it needs to be. He's like 2011-2012 Roddick with more athleticism but less serve and more pushing. Now he's been around a while, the kid gloves are off, and he needs to start proving himself.

2013 is a crucial year for Ryan. If he continues to stall out, then I think it becomes increasingly likely he'll never be a consistent major factor at the top of the game.

He's slacked off big time. Needs to work hard 24/7.

I'm looking forward to these threads Filo V.

It would be cool to put the player's ranking at the end of last year in your OPs. Harrison was 79th.

I give him a C. He got some tough Slam draws and did his job against most lower ranked opponents. And there is still only one player who is younger and ranked higher than him.

The player is going backwords, hasn't failed yet though, so a D.

D sounds about right. From what I saw, his backhand is exploitable and he is too passive. His forehand has a lot of topspin and lands short.

That is even before looking at his head "problems"

He has absolutely nothing for anyone to get excited about. If he was any nationality other than American nobody would talk about him.

F. He played worse than in 2011, and it says volumes because in 2011 he played worse than in 2010.
And every year he start with same old song: "I will keep my emotions under control, I'll make next step, I'll fight strong, blah-blah-blah". All talk.
I am disappointed.

D+. He managed to get to #43 in the rankings, but then fell back. No significant result but shows some promise still. I expected more of him, to be honest.

He did ok for a solid top 100 player. That's about it.

Very good idea for a thread, Harrison has got D from me for this season. He has a promising first half of the season, but american hardcourt swing was a disappointment, really.

He ended a season sooner, but he is now already practising for next year (via his twitter). As far I know, he wants to go to the limit in offseason.
