I can admit I didn't watch 90s RGs. And that's why I said "I've understood" here. And I based that on this:

I see. I suppose this is in reference to RG 2011, which undoubtedly was faster than ever before, mainly credited to the different balls. In the 90s conditions varied. Some years tended to be slower. 1999 was not, as I remember it. A match such as the QF Hrbaty - Rios sported a lot of winners hit in much the same way as Federer and Söderling did throughout the 2009 tournament.

96 was exceptionally dry and fast, from memory

its a shame that they've sped RG up from what it used to be

but that is all part of the ATP plan:

- slow down grass

- slow down and increase % of hard courts

- speed up clay

- destroy indoors, get rid of carpet

perfectly identical courts everywhere. money making dream. faceless robots at the top. ATP 2020

RG is disgustingly fast these days. Faster than Indian Wells and Miami for sure. You hardly ever see classic clay court tennis anymore. But of course tards who are complaining about slowing down the surfaces are just fine with the fact that RG has become a ballbasher haven. The very fact that an absolutely mindless ballbasher Clownga pushed Djokovic to 5 sets and held 2MPs is proof enough how disgusting his surface has become. They can speed up the courts when RG is slowed down to Monte Carlo level.

I was not comparing 2009 and 2006. I was comparing 2009 with 1999, a year that was faster than the surrounding years. 2001 was slower. In fact, all the years Kuerten won were slow, which I don't suppose was a coincidence - he was of course better in slow conditions. Nor do I believe it was a coincidence that non-clay specialists Kafelnikov (over Stich in the F, Sampras in the SF and Krajicek in the QF!) and Agassi won in the faster years 1996 and 1999. Did you watch in 1999?

And by the way, I would personally like RG to be slowed down again, as well as W and USO sped up. I am in favor of more variation, not fast courts everywhere.

This type of thing used to not bother me as much, or at least I didn't realize that it did, but it's been on my mind a lot lately.

I was chatting with someone about the Del Potro-Djokovic match some time after it happened, and we were more or less criticizing Del Potro for his lack of variety. In particular, I noticed that Del Potro kept like 95% of his backhands cross court, and missed at least half of the ones he took up the line. We basically summed his game up as somewhat predictable.

While that's more or less a valid observation, I couldn't help but feel ridiculous for asking more from a guy who hits the ball that hard. Forget the fact that he's consistently one of the hardest hitting players on tour and still manages an outstanding level of consistency, but now he's supposed to have outrageous variety in his shot selection as well? We ask so much, but I remember a time when guys like Roddick, Gonzalez, and Safin could literally pin you to a corner with one shot to force a weak reply, and slam it right by you in the same corner for a winner. It didn't matter that opponents knew where the ball was going because there was nothing they could do about it.

To then question the dimensions of DP's game really brings to light how slow the courts have gotten. The end of that second set comes to mind as an illustrative one. Yes, Djokovic played some amazing defense to fend off a blistering DP, but there's no way he would have gotten some of those balls back (at least as effectively) had the courts been what they once were.

It's a real shame... I wouldn't ask that every court play lightning fast, but at least give us something back... I'm tired of seeing players forced into extended rallies for points on in.

Shanghai isn't that fast, then again there aren't any fast courts at the moment.

I think we are seeing subtle changes that indicate the ATP are willing to speed up the courts, at least for a bit.

IMO, Australia will definitely play faster next year.

It was very warm, leading to the very fast and high bouncing conditions. That's the thing with clay can only control it so much, weather is a much bigger factor. Only so much can be done with more clay on the base if the weather is hot.

Shame then that the ATP does not control the Slams. I doubt we'll see anything different than slow borefests.
